They would not be like their forefathers1-- a stubborn2 and rebellious3 generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.
The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,4 turned back on the day of battle;510
they did not keep God's covenant6 and refused to live by his law.711
They forgot what he had done,8 the wonders he had shown them.
He did miracles9 in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt,10 in the region of Zoan.1113
He divided the sea12 and led them through; he made the water stand firm like a wall.1314
He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.1415
He split the rocks15 in the desert and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.
But they continued to sin16 against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.
They willfully put God to the test17 by demanding the food they craved.18
