Mark 14:33 Meaning and Commentary

Mark 14:33

And he taketh with him Peter, and James, and John
Who were witnesses of his transfiguration on the mount, and now of his sorrows in the garden: and began to be sore amazed;
to be in great consternation and astonishment, at the sight of all the sins of his people coming upon him; at the black storm of wrath, that was gathering thick over him; at the sword of justice which was brandished against him; and at the curses of the righteous law, which, like so many thunderbolts of vengeance, were directed at him: no wonder it should be added, and to be very heavy: both with sin and sorrow;
(See Gill on Matthew 26:37).

Mark 14:33 In-Context

31 But he spoke the more vehemently: Although I should die together with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner also said they all.
32 And they came to a farm called Gethsemani. And he saith to his disciples: Sit you here, while I pray.
33 And he taketh Peter and James and John with him: and he began to fear and to be heavy.
34 And he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death. Stay you here and watch.
35 And when he was gone forward a little, he fell flat on the ground: and he prayed that, if it might be, the hour might pass from him.
