Psalms 59:9 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 59:9

[Because of] his strength will I wait upon thee
Either because of the strength of Saul, who was stronger than David, he determined to wait upon the Lord for salvation and deliverance from him; or because of the strength of the Lord, which he expected from him, and therefore would wait upon him for it. The Septuagint and Vulgate Latin versions, and also the Chaldee paraphrase, render the words, "my strength will I keep for thee"; or "with thee". I ascribe all my strength unto thee; I expect every supply of it from thee, and put my trust and confidence in thee for it: so did Christ as man, and had strength from the Lord, according to his promise, ( Isaiah 50:7 Isaiah 50:9 ) ( Psalms 89:21 ) ( 86:17 ) ; and so every believer, ( Isaiah 14:24 ) ( 40:31 ) ;

for God [is] my defence;
or "my high refuge"; or "high tower" F23; see ( Psalms 9:9 ) ( 46:7 ) ; where he was defended and exalted, as is petitioned ( Psalms 59:1 ) ; and was safe and secure from every enemy.

Psalms 59:9 In-Context

7 (58-8) Behold they shall speak with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips: for who, say they, hath heard us?
8 (58-9) But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them: thou shalt bring all the nations to nothing.
9 (58-10) I will keep my strength to thee: for thou art my protector:
10 (58-11) My God, his mercy shall prevent me.
11 (58-12) God shall let me see over my enemies: slay them not, lest at any time my people forget. Scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord, my protector:
