6 And now all its 1carved work They smash with hatchet and hammers.

Psalms 74:6 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 74:6

But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with
axes and hammers.
] Formerly it was an honour to be employed in cutting down a tree for the building of the temple; but now so little regard was paid to it, that all its fine carved work, which Solomon made, ( 1 Kings 6:18 1 Kings 6:29 1 Kings 6:30 ) , was demolished at once in a rude and furious manner with axes and hammers; which was done either by the Chaldeans in Nebuchadnezzar's time, or by the Syrians in the times of Antiochus, or by the Romans in the times of Vespasian; the first seems intended; see ( Jeremiah 46:22 Jeremiah 46:23 ) .

Psalms 74:6 In-Context

4 Your adversaries have roared in the midst of Your meeting place; They have set up their own standards for signs.
5 It seems as if one had lifted up His axe in a forest of trees.
6 And now all its carved work They smash with hatchet and hammers.
7 They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground; They have defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
8 They said in their heart, "Let us completely subdue them." They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
