22 The crowdrose up togetheragainst them, and the chiefmagistratestore their robesoff them and proceeded to order them to be 1beaten with rods.

When they had struck them with manyblows, they threw them into prison, commanding2the jailer to guard them securely;

and he, having receivedsuch a command, threw them into the innerprison and fastened their feet in 3the stocks.

But aboutmidnight4Paul and Silas were praying and 5singinghymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

and suddenly6there came a greatearthquake, so that the foundations of the prisonhouse were shaken; and immediately7all the doors were opened and everyone's8chains were unfastened.

When 9the jailerawoke and saw the prisondoorsopened, he drew his sword and was about10to killhimself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

But Paulcried out with a loudvoice, saying, "Do not harmyourself, for we are allhere!"

And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he felldownbefore11Paul and Silas,
30
and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, 12whatmust I do to be saved?"
The Jailer Converted
31 They said, "13Believe in the LordJesus, and you will be saved, you and 14your household."

And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with allwho were in his house.
33
And he took them 15that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.
34
And he brought them into his house and setfoodbefore them, and rejoicedgreatly, having believed in God with 16his wholehousehold.
35
Now when daycame, the chiefmagistratessent their policemen, saying, "Releasethosemen."
36
And 17the jailerreportedthesewords to Paul, saying, "The chiefmagistrates have sent to release you. Thereforecome out now and go18in peace."
37
But Paulsaid to them, "They have beaten us in publicwithouttrial, 19men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison; and now are they sending us awaysecretly? Noindeed! But let them comethemselves and bring us out."

The policemenreportedthesewords to the chiefmagistrates. 20They were afraid when they heard that they were Romans,

and they came and appealed to them, and when they had brought them out, they kept begging them 21to leave the city.
40
They went out of the prison and entered the house of 22Lydia, and when they saw23the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
