1 When Jesus had spokenthese words, 1He wentforth with His disciplesover2the ravine of the Kidron, where there was 3a garden, in which He entered with His disciples.
2
NowJudasalso, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had 4oftenmetthere with His disciples.
3
5Judasthen, having received6the Roman cohort and 7officers from the chiefpriests and the Pharisees, camethere with lanterns and 8torches and weapons.
4
SoJesus, 9knowingall the things that were coming upon Him, wentforth and said to them, "10Whom do you seek?"
5
They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He said to them, "I am He." And Judasalso, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.
6
Sowhen He said to them, "I am He," they drewback and fell to the ground.
7
Therefore He againasked them, "11Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene."
8
Jesusanswered, "I told you that I am He; soif you seek Me, letthesego their way,"
9
to fulfill the wordwhich He spoke, "12Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one."
10
SimonPeterthen, 13having a sword, drew it and struck the highpriest'sslave, and cutoff his rightear; and the slave'sname was Malchus.
11
SoJesussaid to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath; 14the cupwhich the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?"
Jesus before the Priests
1215So16the Roman cohort and the commander and the 17officers of the Jews, arrestedJesus and bound Him,
13
and led Him to 18Annasfirst; for he was father-in-law of 19Caiaphas, who was highpriest that year.
14
NowCaiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that 20it was expedient for oneman to die on behalf of the people.
15
21SimonPeter was followingJesus, and so was anotherdisciple. Now that disciple was known to the highpriest, and entered with Jesus into 22the court of the highpriest,
16
23but Peter was standing at the dooroutside. So the otherdisciple, who was known to the highpriest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and broughtPeter in.
17
24Then the slave-girl who kept the doorsaid to Peter, "25You are not also one of thisman'sdisciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."
18
Now the slaves and the 26officers were standing there, having made27a charcoalfire, for it was cold and they were 28warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
19
29The highpriestthenquestionedJesusabout His disciples, and about His teaching.
20
Jesusanswered him, "I 30have spokenopenly to the world; I always31taught in synagogues and 32in the temple, whereall the Jewscometogether; and I spokenothing in secret.
21
"Why do you question Me? Questionthose who have heardwhat I spoke to them; they knowwhat I said."
22
When He had saidthis, one of the 33officersstandingnearby34struck*Jesus, saying, "Is that the way You answer the highpriest?"
23
35Jesusanswered him, "If I have spokenwrongly, testify of the wrong; but ifrightly, why do you strike Me?"
24
36SoAnnassent Him bound to 37Caiaphas the highpriest.
Peter's Denial of Jesus
2538Now39SimonPeter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, "40You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."
26
One of the slaves of the highpriest, being a relative of the one 41whoseearPetercutoff, said, "Did I not see you in 42the garden with Him?"
27
Peterthendenied it again, and immediately43a roostercrowed.
