28
ThenJesuscried out in the temple, 1teaching and saying, "2You bothknow Me and knowwhere I am from; and 3I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.
29
"4I know Him, because5I am from Him, and 6He sent Me."
30
So they 7were seeking to seize Him; and nomanlaid his hand on Him, because His 8hour had not yetcome.
31
But 9many of the crowdbelieved in Him; and they were saying, "10When the Christcomes, He will not performmore11signs than those whichthisman has, will He?"
32
The Phariseesheard the crowdmutteringthesethingsabout Him, and the chiefpriests and the Phariseessent12officers to 13seize Him.
33
ThereforeJesussaid, "14For a littlewhilelonger I am with you, then15I go to Him who sent Me.
34
"16You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot*come."
35
17The Jewsthensaid to oneanother, "18Where does thismanintend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to 19the Dispersion among 20the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He?
36
"What is thisstatement that He said, '21You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot*come '?"
37
Now on 22the lastday, the great day of the feast, Jesusstood and cried out, saying, "23Ifanyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
38
"He who believes in Me, 24as the Scripturesaid, 'From his innermostbeing will flowrivers of 25livingwater.' "
39
But this He spoke26of the Spirit, whomthose who believed in Him were to receive; for 27the Spirit was not yet given, becauseJesus was not yet28glorified.
Division of People over Jesus
40 Some of the peopletherefore, when they heardthesewords, were saying, "Thiscertainly is 29the Prophet."
41
Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "30Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?
42
"Has not the Scripturesaid that the Christcomes from 31the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the villagewhereDavid was?"
43
So32a divisionoccurred in the crowdbecause of Him.
44
33Some of them wanted to seize Him, but noonelaidhands on Him.
45
The 34officersthencame to the chiefpriests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why* did you not bring Him?"
46
The 35officersanswered, "36Never has a manspoken the waythismanspeaks."
47
The Phariseesthenanswered them, "37You have not also been ledastray, have you?
48
"38Noone of 39the rulersorPharisees has believed in Him, has he?
49
"But thiscrowd which does not know the Law is accursed."
50
40Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, beingone of them) said to them,
51
"41Our Law does not judge a manunless* it firsthears from him and knowswhat he is doing, does it?"
52
They answered him, "42You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that noprophetarises out of Galilee."
