Or "How the Lord in his anger / has treated Daughter Zion with contempt"
Without pity4 the Lord has swallowed5 up all the dwellings of Jacob; in his wrath he has torn down the strongholds6 of Daughter Judah. He has brought her kingdom and its princes down to the ground7 in dishonor.
He has laid waste his dwelling like a garden; he has destroyed20 his place of meeting.21 The LORD has made Zion forget her appointed festivals and her Sabbaths;22 in his fierce anger he has spurned both king and priest.23
The Lord has rejected his altar and abandoned his sanctuary.24 He has given the walls of her palaces25 into the hands of the enemy; they have raised a shout in the house of the LORD as on the day of an appointed festival.26
The LORD determined to tear down the wall around Daughter Zion.27 He stretched out a measuring line28 and did not withhold his hand from destroying. He made ramparts29 and walls lament; together they wasted away.30
Her gates31 have sunk into the ground; their bars32 he has broken and destroyed. Her king and her princes are exiled33 among the nations, the law34 is no more, and her prophets35 no longer find visions36 from the LORD.
What can I say for you?51 With what can I compare you, Daughter52 Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, Virgin Daughter Zion?53 Your wound is as deep as the sea.54 Who can heal you?
All who pass your way clap their hands at you;58 they scoff59 and shake their heads60 at Daughter Jerusalem:61 "Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty,62 the joy of the whole earth?"63
The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled68 his word, which he decreed long ago.69 He has overthrown you without pity,70 he has let the enemy gloat over you,71 he has exalted the hornc of your foes.72
Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart78 like water in the presence of the Lord.79 Lift up your hands80 to him for the lives of your children, who faint81 from hunger at every street corner.
"Look, LORD, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring,82 the children they have cared for?83 Should priest and prophet be killed84 in the sanctuary of the Lord?85
"Young and old lie together in the dust of the streets; my young men and young women have fallen by the sword.86 You have slain them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered them without pity.87
"As you summon to a feast day, so you summoned against me terrors88 on every side. In the day of the LORD's anger no one escaped89 or survived; those I cared for and reared90 my enemy has destroyed."
