Genesis 46:23

23 The son of Dan; Hushim.

Genesis 46:23 Meaning and Commentary

Genesis 46:23

And the sons of Dan, Hushim.
] He had but one son, wherefore the plural is put for the singular, see ( Genesis 46:7 Genesis 46:15 ) ; Aben Ezra thinks he had two sons, and that one of them was dead, and therefore not mentioned; but the other way best accounts for the expression; though, as Schmidt observes, the plural may be indefinitely put, and the sense be this, as for the sons of Dan, there was only one, whose name was Hushim. Dan was a son of Jacob by Bilhah, Rachel's maid, as the following was another.

Genesis 46:23 In-Context

21 The sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, and Ehi, and Rosh, and Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.
22 These were the sons of Rachel, the which Jacob begat (whom Jacob begat through her); all the persons were fourteen.
23 The son of Dan; Hushim.
24 The sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.
25 These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter (whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel). And Jacob begat these (through Bilhah); all the souls were seven.
