Joshua 11:22

22 He left not any man of the generation of Anakim in the land of the sons of Israel, without the cities of Gaza, and Gath, and Ashdod (except in the cities of Gaza, and Gath, and Ashdod), in which alone they were left.

Joshua 11:22 Meaning and Commentary

Joshua 11:22

There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children
of Israel
For those that escaped the sword fled elsewhere, particularly to the following places:

only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod there remained;
that is, some of the Anakims or giants; these were three of the five principalities of the Philistines, and were never conquered and possessed by Israel, see ( Joshua 13:3 ) ; of the city of Gaza, (See Gill on Amos 1:7); (See Gill on Amos 1:8); and (See Gill on Zephaniah 2:4); and of Gath, (See Gill on Amos 6:2); Ashdod is the same with Azotus, (See Gill on Acts 8:40): Mela says F8, the port of Azotus was a mart for the merchandises of Arabia, and was built on such an eminence, that from the top of it, at the fourth watch, might be seen the rising of the sun at the mountain Azotus; see

``Who discomfited the right wing, and pursued them unto the mount Azotus.'' (1 Maccabees 9:15)

this city held out a siege of twenty nine years against Psammitticus, king of Egypt, (See Gill on Isaiah 20:1).

Joshua 11:22 In-Context

20 For it was the sentence of the Lord, that the hearts of them should be made hard, and that they should fight against Israel, and should fall, and [they] should not deserve any mercy, and should perish (but should perish), as the Lord commanded, to Moses.
21 Joshua came in that time, and killed (the) Anakim, that is, (the) giants, from the hilly places of Hebron, and of Debir, and of Anab (from the hill country of Hebron, and Debir, and Anab), and from all the hill (country) of Judah, and of Israel, and did away their cities.
22 He left not any man of the generation of Anakim in the land of the sons of Israel, without the cities of Gaza, and Gath, and Ashdod (except in the cities of Gaza, and Gath, and Ashdod), in which alone they were left.
23 Then Joshua took all the land, as the Lord spake to Moses, and he gave it into (a) possession to the sons of Israel, by their parts and lineages (and he gave it to the Israelites for a possession, a portion to each tribe); and (so) the land rested from battles.
