84 These things were offered of the sons of Israel, in the hallowing of the altar, in the day in which it was hallowed; silver vessels to prove incense and such things twelve, silver basins twelve, golden spoons twelve; (These were the things that were offered by the leaders of Israel, for the dedication of the altar, on the day in which it was anointed; twelve silver vessels, twelve silver basins, and twelve gold saucers;)

Numbers 7:84 Meaning and Commentary

Numbers 7:84

This [was] the dedication of the altar by the princes
These the presents they made, and the offerings they offered when the altar first began to be made use of, after it had been anointed and sanctified for sacred service:

in the day when it was anointed:
this shows that it was not the precise and exact day of the setting up of the tabernacle, and the anointing of the altar, that the above presents and offerings were brought, since they were twelve successive days in bringing; but that the sense is, that about that time, or quickly after it was anointed, the princes dedicated it in the manner before described:

twelve chargers of silver, twelve silver bowls, twelve spoons of gold;
according to the number of the princes, and the tribes they were princes of; a noble instance both of devotion and piety, and of liberality and generosity; and is a standing example on record to all princes and great personages in all successive ages, to promote religion and godliness, by their own personal conduct and behaviour, and to encourage and support it by their generous benefactions and donations: the sum total of what they contributed is in this and the following verses given.

83 And into (the) sacrifice of peaceable things he offered twain oxen, five rams, five goat bucks, five lambs of one year. This was the offering of Ahira, the son of Enan. (And for a peace offering, he offered two oxen, five rams, five goat bucks, and five one-year-old lambs. This was the offering of Ahira, the son of Enan.)

85 so that one vessel to prove incense and such things had an hundred and thirty shekels of silver, and one basin had seventy shekels, that is, in common, two thousand and four hundred shekels of all the vessels of silver, by the weight of [the] saintuary; (and each silver vessel weighed a hundred and thirty silver shekels, and each silver basin weighed seventy silver shekels, so that altogether, all the silver dishes weighed two thousand and four hundred shekels, by the measure of the sanctuary;)

86 golden spoons twelve, full of incense, weighing ten shekels, by (the) weight of the saintuary, that is, (al)together, an hundred and twenty shekels of gold; (twelve gold saucers, full of incense, each weighing ten shekels, by the measure of the sanctuary, so that altogether, all the gold of the dishes weighed a hundred and twenty shekels;)
