Mark 8:34-38

RSV

NIV

34 And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
35 For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it.
35 For whoever wants to save their lifewill lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.
36 For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
37 For what can a man give in return for his life?
37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
