1 Samuel unge a Saúl como rey<br />Entonces Samuel tomó un frasco de aceite de oliva y lo derramó sobre la cabeza de Saúl. Besó a Saúl y dijo: «Hago esto porque el Señor<br /> te ha designado para que gobiernes a Israel, su posesión más preciada.

Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the LORD anointed you ruler over his inheritance?
2 Cuando me dejes hoy, verás a dos hombres junto a la tumba de Raquel en Selsa, en los límites del territorio de Benjamín. Ellos te dirán que los burros fueron encontrados y que tu padre dejó de preocuparse por ellos, pero que ahora está preocupado por ti. Está preguntando: “¿Han visto a mi hijo?”.

When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb, at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried about you. He is asking, “What shall I do about my son?” ’
3 »Cuando llegues al roble de Tabor, te encontrarás con tres hombres que van camino a Betel para adorar a Dios. Uno llevará tres cabritos, otro tendrá tres panes y el tercero un odre lleno de vino.

“Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men going up to worship God at Bethel will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine.
4 Los tres hombres te saludarán y te ofrecerán dos panes, los cuales debes aceptar.

They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you will accept from them.
5 »Cuando llegues a Guibeá de Dios,<br /> donde está la guarnición de los filisteos, encontrarás a un grupo de profetas que desciende del lugar de adoración. Estarán tocando un arpa, una pandereta, una flauta y una lira, y estarán profetizando.

“After that you will go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine outpost. As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, timbrels, pipes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying.
6 En ese momento el Espíritu del Señor<br /> vendrá poderosamente sobre ti y profetizarás con ellos. Serás transformado en una persona diferente.

The Spirit of the LORD will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person.
7 Después de que sucedan estas señales, haz lo que deba hacerse, porque Dios está contigo.

Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you.
8 Luego desciende a Gilgal delante de mí. Allí me encontraré contigo para sacrificar ofrendas quemadas y ofrendas de paz. Deberás esperar siete días hasta que yo llegue y te dé más instrucciones».

“Go down ahead of me to Gilgal. I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.”
9 Las señales de Samuel se cumplen<br />Mientras Saúl se daba vuelta para irse, Dios le dio un nuevo corazón, y todas las señales de Samuel se cumplieron en ese día.

As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day.
10 Cuando Saúl y su siervo llegaron a Guibeá, vieron a un grupo de profetas que se les acercaba. Entonces el Espíritu de Dios vino poderosamente sobre Saúl, y él también comenzó a profetizar.

When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.
11 Cuando los que conocían a Saúl se enteraron de lo sucedido, exclamaron: «¿Qué? ¿Hasta Saúl es profeta? ¿Cómo se convirtió el hijo de Cis en profeta?».

When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
12 Además, uno de los que estaban allí dijo: «¿Cualquiera puede convertirse en profeta, sin importar quien sea su padre?»<br />. Este es el origen del dicho: «¿Hasta Saúl es profeta?».

A man who lived there answered, “And who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
13 Cuando Saúl terminó de profetizar, subió al lugar de adoración.

After Saul stopped prophesying, he went to the high place.
14 —¿Dónde han estado? —les preguntó el tío de Saúl a él y a su siervo.<br />—Estábamos buscando a los burros —le respondió Saúl—, pero no pudimos encontrarlos. Así que acudimos a Samuel para preguntarle dónde estaban.

Now Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?” “Looking for the donkeys,” he said. “But when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”
15 —¡Ah! ¿Y qué dijo? —le preguntó su tío.

Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me what Samuel said to you.”
16 —Nos dijo que ya habían encontrado los burros —contestó Saúl.<br />Pero Saúl no le contó a su tío lo que Samuel había dicho acerca del reino.

Saul replied, “He assured us that the donkeys had been found.” But he did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingship.
17 Saúl es proclamado rey<br />Después Samuel convocó a todo el pueblo de Israel para que se reuniera delante del Señor<br /> en Mizpa,

Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the LORD at Mizpah
18 y dijo: «Esto es lo que el Señor<br />, Dios de Israel, ha declarado: “Los saqué de Egipto; los rescaté de los egipcios y de todas las naciones que los oprimían.

and said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’
19 Pero aunque los rescaté de su miseria y aflicción, hoy han rechazado a su Dios y han dicho: ‘¡No, en lugar de Dios queremos un rey!’. Por lo tanto, preséntense ahora delante del Señor<br /> por tribus y clanes”».

But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king over us.’ So now present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans.”
20 Entonces Samuel reunió a todas las tribus de Israel delante del Señor<br />, y por sorteo se eligió a la tribu de Benjamín.

When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot.
21 Después llevó a cada familia de la tribu de Benjamín delante del Señor<br />, y se eligió a la familia de los Matri. Finalmente de entre ellos fue escogido Saúl, hijo de Cis. Pero cuando lo buscaron, ¡había desaparecido!

Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri’s clan was taken. Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found.
22 Entonces le preguntaron al Señor<br />:<br />—¿Dónde está?<br />Y el Señor<br /> contestó:<br />—Está escondido entre el equipaje.

So they inquired further of the LORD, “Has the man come here yet?” And the LORD said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”
23 Así que lo encontraron y lo sacaron. Era tan alto que los demás apenas le llegaban al hombro.

They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of the others.
24 Luego Samuel dijo a todo el pueblo: «Este es el hombre que el Señor<br /> ha escogido como su rey. ¡No hay nadie como él en todo Israel!».<br />Y todo el pueblo gritó: «¡Viva el rey!».

Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the LORD has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people.” Then the people shouted, “Long live the king!”
25 Después, Samuel le explicó al pueblo cuales eran los derechos y las obligaciones de un rey. Los escribió en un rollo y lo puso delante del Señor<br />. Luego Samuel envió al pueblo a sus casas.

Samuel explained to the people the rights and duties of kingship. He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the LORD. Then Samuel dismissed the people to go to their own homes.
26 Cuando Saúl regresó a su casa en Guibeá lo acompañó un grupo de hombres a quienes Dios les había tocado el corazón.

Saul also went to his home in Gibeah, accompanied by valiant men whose hearts God had touched.
27 Sin embargo, había unos sinvergüenzas que se quejaban: «¿Cómo puede este hombre salvarnos?». Y lo despreciaban y se negaban a llevarle regalos; pero Saúl no les hizo caso.<br />[Nahas, rey de los amonitas, había estado oprimiendo gravemente a los habitantes de Gad y de Rubén que vivían al oriente del río Jordán. Les sacó el ojo derecho a todos los israelitas que vivían allí, y no permitía que nadie viniera a rescatarlos. De hecho, de todos los israelitas que vivían al oriente del río Jordán, no había uno solo a quien Nahas no le hubiera sacado el ojo derecho. Pero había siete mil hombres que habían escapado de los amonitas y se habían establecido en Jabes de Galaad]<br />.

But some scoundrels said, “How can this fellow save us?” They despised him and brought him no gifts. But Saul kept silent.
