1 Timothy 4

NIRV

NIV

1 The Holy Spirit clearly says that in the last days some people will leave the faith. They will follow spirits that will fool them. They will believe things that demons will teach them.
1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
2 Teachings like those come from liars who pretend to be what they are not. Their sense of what is right and wrong has been burned as if with a hot iron.
2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
3 They do not allow people to get married. They order them not to eat certain foods. But God created those foods. So people who believe and know the truth should receive them and give thanks for them.
3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.
4 Everything God created is good. You shouldn't turn anything down. Instead, you should thank God for it.
4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
5 The word of God and prayer make it holy.
5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
6 Point these things out to the brothers and sisters. Then you will serve Christ Jesus well. You were brought up in the truths of the faith. You received good teaching. You followed it.
6 If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
7 Don't have anything to do with godless stories and silly tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.
7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
8 Training the body has some value. But being godly has value in every way. It promises help for the life you are now living and the life to come.
8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
9 Here is a saying you can trust. You can accept it completely.
9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.
10 We work hard for it. Here is the saying. We have put our hope in the living God. He is the Savior of all people. Most of all he is the Savior of those who believe.
10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
11 Command those things. Teach them.
11 Command and teach these things.
12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young. Set an example for the believers in what you say and in how you live. Also set an example in how you love and in what you believe. Show the believers how to be pure.
12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
13 Until I come, spend your time reading Scripture out loud to one another. Spend your time preaching and teaching.
13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.
14 Don't fail to use the gift the Holy Spirit gave you. He gave it to you through a message from God. It was given when the elders placed their hands on you.
14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
15 Keep on doing those things. Give them your complete attention. Then everyone will see how you are coming along.
15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.
16 Be careful of how you live and what you believe. Never give up. Then you will save yourself and those who hear you.
16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
