1 Corinthians 10:1-27

GW

NIV

1 I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that all our ancestors [who left Egypt] were under the cloud, and they all went through the sea.
1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.
2 They were all united with Moses by baptism in the cloud and in the sea.
2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
3 All of them ate the same spiritual food,
3 They all ate the same spiritual food
4 and all of them drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them, and that rock was Christ.
4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
5 Yet, God was not pleased with most of them, so their dead bodies were scattered over the desert.
5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 These things have become examples for us so that we won't desire what is evil, as they did.
6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
7 So don't worship false gods as some of them did, as Scripture says, "The people sat down to a feast which turned into an orgy."
7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
8 We shouldn't sin sexually as some of them did. Twenty-three thousand of them died on one day.
8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.
9 We shouldn't put the Lord to the test as some of them did. They were killed by snakes.
9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.
10 Don't complain as some of them did. The angel of death destroyed them.
10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
11 These things happened to make them an example for others. These things were written down as a warning for us who are living in the closing days of history.
11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
12 So, people who think they are standing firmly should be careful that they don't fall.
12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
13 There isn't any temptation that you have experienced which is unusual for humans. God, who faithfully keeps his promises, will not allow you to be tempted beyond your power to resist. But when you are tempted, he will also give you the ability to endure the temptation as your way of escape.
13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
14 Therefore, my dear friends, get as far away from the worship of false gods as you can.
14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
15 I'm talking to intelligent people. Judge for yourselves what I'm saying.
15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.
16 When we bless the cup of blessing aren't we sharing in the blood of Christ? When we break the bread aren't we sharing in the body of Christ?
16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
17 Because there is one loaf, we are one body, although we are many individuals. All of us share one loaf.
17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
18 Look at the people of Israel from a human point of view. Don't those who eat the sacrifices share what is on the altar?
18 Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
19 Do I mean that an offering made to a false god is anything, or that a false god itself is anything?
19 Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20 Hardly! What I am saying is that these sacrifices which people make are made to demons and not to God. I don't want you to be partners with demons.
20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.
21 You cannot drink the Lord's cup and the cup of demons. You cannot participate at the table of the Lord and at the table of demons.
21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.
22 Are we trying to make the Lord jealous? Are we stronger than he is?
22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
23 Someone may say, "I'm allowed to do anything," but not everything is helpful. I'm allowed to do anything, but not everything encourages growth.
23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.
24 People should be concerned about others and not just about themselves.
24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
25 Eat anything that is sold in the market without letting your conscience trouble you.
25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
26 Certainly, "The earth is the Lord's and everything it contains is his."
26 for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”
27 If an unbeliever invites you [to his house for dinner], and you wish to go, eat anything he serves you without letting your conscience trouble you.
27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.
