1 Mirad cuán gran amor nos ha otorgado el Padre, para que seamos llamados hijos de Dios; y eso somos. Por esto el mundo no nos conoce, porque no le conoció a El.

2 Amados, ahora somos hijos de Dios y aún no se ha manifestado lo que habremos de ser. Pero sabemos que cuando El se manifieste, seremos semejantes a El porque le veremos como El es.

3 Y todo el que tiene esta esperanza puesta en El, se purifica, así como El es puro.

4 Todo el que practica el pecado, practica también la infracción de la ley, pues el pecado es infracción de la ley.

5 Y vosotros sabéis que El se manifestó a fin de quitar los pecados, y en El no hay pecado.

6 Todo el que permanece en El, no peca; todo el que peca, ni le ha visto ni le ha conocido.

7 Hijos míos, que nadie os engañe; el que practica la justicia es justo, así como El es justo.

8 El que practica el pecado es del diablo, porque el diablo ha pecado desde el principio. El Hijo de Dios se manifestó con este propósito: para destruir las obras del diablo.

9 Ninguno que es nacido de Dios practica el pecado, porque la simiente de Dios permanece en él; y no puede pecar, porque es nacido de Dios.

10 En esto se reconocen los hijos de Dios y los hijos del diablo: todo aquel que no practica la justicia, no es de Dios; tampoco aquel que no ama a su hermano.

11 Porque este es el mensaje que habéis oído desde el principio: que nos amemos unos a otros;

12 no como Caín que era del maligno, y mató a su hermano. ¿Y por qué causa lo mató? Porque sus obras eran malas, y las de su hermano justas.

13 Hermanos, no os maravilléis si el mundo os odia.

14 Nosotros sabemos que hemos pasado de muerte a vida porque amamos a los hermanos. El que no ama permanece en muerte.

15 Todo el que aborrece a su hermano es homicida, y vosotros sabéis que ningún homicida tiene vida eterna permanente en él.

16 En esto conocemos el amor: en que El puso su vida por nosotros; también nosotros debemos poner nuestras vidas por los hermanos.

17 Pero el que tiene bienes de este mundo, y ve a su hermano en necesidad y cierra su corazón contra él, ¿cómo puede morar el amor de Dios en él?

18 Hijos, no amemos de palabra ni de lengua, sino de hecho y en verdad.

19 En esto sabremos que somos de la verdad, y aseguraremos nuestros corazones delante de El

20 en cualquier cosa en que nuestro corazón nos condene; porque Dios es mayor que nuestro corazón y sabe todas las cosas.

21 Amados, si nuestro corazón no nos condena, confianza tenemos delante de Dios;

22 y todo lo que pidamos lo recibimos de El, porque guardamos sus mandamientos y hacemos las cosas que son agradables delante de El.

23 Y este es su mandamiento: que creamos en el nombre de su Hijo Jesucristo, y que nos amemos unos a otros como El nos ha mandado.

24 El que guarda sus mandamientos permanece en El y Dios en él. Y en esto sabemos que El permanece en nosotros: por el Espíritu que nos ha dado.

1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.

6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.

8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.

12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.

13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.

14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?

18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence:

20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God

22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.

23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.

24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
