1 Pasados muchos días, vino <em>la</em> palabra del SEÑOR a Elías en el tercer año, diciendo: Ve, muéstrate a Acab, y <em>yo</em> daré lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra

2 Fue, <em>pues</em>, Elías a mostrarse a Acab; y había gran hambre en Samaria

3 Y Acab llamó a Abdías su mayordomo. (El cual Abdías era en gran manera temeroso del SEÑOR

4 porque cuando Jezabel talaba los profetas del SEÑOR, Abdías tomó cien profetas, los cuales escondió de cincuenta en cincuenta por cuevas, y los sustentó con pan y agua.

5 Y dijo Acab a Abdías: Ve por la tierra a todas las fuentes de aguas, y a todos los arroyos; si a dicha hallaremos grama con que conservemos la vida a los caballos y a las mulas, para que no nos quedemos sin bestias

6 Y partieron entre sí la tierra para recorrerlo; Acab fue de por sí por un camino, y Abdías fue separadamente por otro

7 Y yendo Abdías por el camino, se encontró con Elías; y cuando lo reconoció, se postró sobre su rostro, y dijo: ¿No eres <em>tú</em> mi señor Elías

8 Y él respondió: Yo <em>soy</em>; ve, di a tu amo: <em>He aquí</em> Elías. {Heb. El SEÑOR es Dios

9 <em>Pero</em> él dijo: ¿En qué he pecado, para que tú entregues tu siervo en mano de Acab para que me mate

10 Vive el SEÑOR tu Dios, que no ha habido nación ni reino donde mi señor no haya enviado a buscarte; y respondiendo <em>todos</em>: No <em>está aquí</em>, él ha conjurado a reinos y naciones si te han hallado

11 ¿Y ahora tú dices: Ve, di a tu amo: <em>He aquí</em> Elías

12 Y acontecerá que, luego que yo me haya separado de ti, el Espíritu del SEÑOR te llevará donde <em>yo</em> no sepa; y viniendo yo, y dando las nuevas a Acab, y no hallándote él, me matará; y tu siervo teme al SEÑOR desde su juventud

13 ¿No ha sido dicho a mi señor lo que hice, cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas del SEÑOR; que escondí de los profetas del SEÑOR cien varones de cincuenta en cincuenta en cuevas, y los mantuve a pan y agua

16 Entonces Abdías fue a encontrarse con Acab, y le dio el aviso; y Acab vino a recibir a Elías

17 Y cuando Acab vio a Elías, le dijo Acab: ¿Eres tú el que turbas a Israel

18 Y él respondió: Yo no he turbado a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, dejando los mandamientos del SEÑOR, y siguiendo a los baales

19 Envía pues ahora y júntame a todo Israel en el monte del Carmelo, y los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal, y los cuatrocientos profetas de los bosques, que comen de la mesa de Jezabel

20 Entonces Acab envió a todos los hijos de Israel, y juntó los profetas en el monte del Carmelo

21 Y acercándose Elías a todo el pueblo, dijo: ¿Hasta cuándo cojearéis <em>vosotros</em> entre dos pensamientos? Si el SEÑOR <em>es</em> Dios, seguidle; y si Baal, id en pos de él. Y el pueblo no respondió palabra

22 Y Elías tornó a decir al pueblo: Sólo yo he quedado profeta del SEÑOR; mas de los profetas de Baal hay cuatrocientos cincuenta varones

23 Dénsenos, pues, dos bueyes, y escójanse ellos uno, y córtenlo en pedazos, y pónganlo sobre leña, mas no pongan fuego debajo; y yo aparejaré el otro buey, y lo pondré sobre leña, y ningún fuego pondré debajo

24 Invocad <em>luego</em> vosotros en el nombre de vuestros dioses, y yo invocaré en el nombre del SEÑOR; y será que el Dios que respondiere por fuego, sea el Dios. Y todo el pueblo respondió, diciendo: Bien dicho

25 Entonces Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: Escogeos un buey, y preparadlo <em>vosotros </em>primero, pues que vosotros sois los más; e invocad en el nombre de vuestros dioses, mas no pongáis fuego debajo

26 Y ellos tomaron el buey que les fue dado, y lo aparejaron, e invocaron en el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo: ¡Baal, respóndenos! Mas no había voz, ni quien respondiera; entre tanto, ellos andaban saltando cerca del altar que habían hecho

27 Y aconteció al mediodía, que Elías <em>se</em> burlaba de ellos, diciendo: Gritad en alta voz, que dios es; por ventura <em>está</em> conversando, o <em>tuvo que</em> ir a la letrina, o <em>va de</em> camino; o duerme, y despertará

28 Y ellos clamaban a grandes voces, y se sajaban con cuchillos y con lancetas conforme a su costumbre, hasta que la sangre se derramaba sobre ellos

29 Y cuando pasó el mediodía, y ellos <em>aun</em> profetizaron hasta el tiempo del ofrecimiento del sacrificio <em>de la tarde</em>, y no <em>había</em> voz, ni quien respondiera ni escuchara

30 entonces Elías dijo a todo el pueblo: Acercaos a mí. Y todo el pueblo se acercó a él; y él reparó el altar del SEÑOR que estaba arruinado

31 Y tomando Elías doce piedras, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, al cual había sido <em>dada</em> palabra del SEÑOR, diciendo: Israel será tu nombre

32 edificó con las piedras <em>un</em> altar en el nombre del SEÑOR; después hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en que cupieran dos medidas de simiente

33 Ordenó luego la leña, y cortó el buey en pedazos, y lo puso sobre la leña

34 Y dijo: Llenad cuatro cántaros de agua, y derramadla sobre el holocausto, y sobre la leña. Y dijo: Hacedlo otra vez; y otra vez lo hicieron. Y dijo: Hacedlo la tercera vez; y lo hicieron la tercera vez

35 De tal manera que las aguas corrían alrededor del altar; y también había llenado de agua la zanja

36 Y cuando llegó la hora de ofrecerse el holocausto de la tarde, se acercó el profeta Elías, y dijo: SEÑOR Dios de Abraham, de Isaac, y de Israel, sea hoy manifiesto que tú <em>eres</em> Dios en Israel, y que yo soy tu siervo, y que por mandato tuyo he hecho todas estas cosas

37 Respóndeme, SEÑOR, respóndeme; para que conozca este pueblo que tú, oh SEÑOR, eres el Dios, y que tú convertirás de nuevo el corazón de ellos <em>a ti</em>

38 Entonces cayó fuego del SEÑOR, el cual consumió el holocausto, la leña, las piedras, el polvo, y aun lamió las aguas que <em>estaban</em> en la zanja

39 Y viéndolo, todo el pueblo, cayeron sobre sus rostros, y dijeron: ¡El SEÑOR es el Dios! ¡El SEÑOR es el Dios

40 Y les dijo Elías: Prended a los profetas de Baal, que no escape ninguno. Y ellos los prendieron; y los llevó Elías al arroyo de Cisón, y allí los mató

41 Entonces Elías dijo a Acab: Sube, come y bebe; porque una gran lluvia suena

42 Y Acab subió a comer y a beber. Y Elías subió a la cumbre del Carmelo; y postrándose en tierra, puso su rostro entre las rodillas

43 Y dijo a su criado: Sube ahora, y mira hacia el mar. Y él subió, y miró, y dijo: No hay nada. Y él le volvió a decir: Vuelve siete veces

1 After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.”

2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,

3 and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the LORD.

4 While Jezebel was killing off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)

5 Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”

6 So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.

7 As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”

8 “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’ ”

9 “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?

10 As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.

11 But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’

12 I don’t know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the LORD since my youth.

13 Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred of the LORD’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.

14 And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”

15 Elijah said, “As the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”

18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the LORD’s commands and have followed the Baals.

19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.

21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing.

22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the LORD’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.

23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.

24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God.” Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”

26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”

28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.

29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which had been torn down.

31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”

32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed.

33 He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”

34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again. “Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.

35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

36 At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.

37 Answer me, LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!”

40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”

42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.

43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked. “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”

44 The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’ ”

45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.

46 The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
