CEB 1 After he had built houses for himself in David's City, David prepared a place for God's chest and pitched a tent for it. NIV 1 After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. CEB 2 David said, "Only the Levites may carry God's chest, because the LORD has chosen them to carry the LORD's chest and to minister to him forever." NIV 2 Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever.” CEB 3 David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring the LORD's chest to the place he had prepared for it. NIV 3 David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it. CEB 4 David also gathered Aaron's family and the Levites: NIV 4 He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites: CEB 5 Uriel, the leader of Kohath's family, and 120 of his relatives; NIV 5 From the descendants of Kohath, Uriel the leader and 120 relatives; CEB 6 Asaiah, the leader of Merari's family, and 220 of his relatives; NIV 6 from the descendants of Merari, Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives; CEB 7 Joel, the leader of Gershom's family, and 130 of his relatives; NIV 7 from the descendants of Gershon,Joel the leader and 130 relatives; CEB 8 Shemaiah, the leader of Elizaphan's family, and 200 of his relatives; NIV 8 from the descendants of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives; CEB 9 Eliel, the leader of Hebron's family, and 80 of his relatives; NIV 9 from the descendants of Hebron, Eliel the leader and 80 relatives; CEB 10 and Amminadab, the leader of Uzziel's family, and 112 of his relatives. CEB 11 David called for the priests Zadok and Abiathar, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab. NIV 11 Then David summoned Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. CEB 12 He said to them, "You are the household heads of the Levites. Make yourselves holy, you and your brothers, and then bring the chest of the LORD, Israel's God, to the place I've prepared for it. NIV 12 He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. CEB 13 When you weren't with us the first time, the LORD our God burst out against us because we didn't ask his advice properly." NIV 13 It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the LORD our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.” CEB 14 So the priests and the Levites made themselves holy to bring up the chest of the LORD, Israel's God. NIV 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. CEB 15 The Levites carried God's chest with poles on their shoulders, just as Moses had commanded according to the LORD's word. NIV 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD. NIV 25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. CEB 26 Since God had helped the Levites who were carrying the chest containing the LORD's covenant, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams. NIV 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed. CEB 27 David wore a fine-linen robe, as did the singers, all the Levites who were carrying the chest, and Chenaniah, the leader of transportation. David also wore a linen priestly vest. NIV 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouts, with the sounding of rams’ horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps. CEB 29 As the chest containing the LORD's covenant entered David's City, Michal, Saul's daughter, looked out the window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing, she lost all respect for him. NIV 29 As the ark of the covenant of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window.
