1 Chronicles 17

CEB 1 When David was settled into his palace, he said to the prophet Nathan, "I'm living in a cedar palace while the chest containing the LORD's covenant is under curtains." NIV 1 After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.” CEB 2 Nathan replied, "Go ahead and do whatever you are thinking, because God is with you." NIV 2 Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.” CEB 3 But that very night God's word came to Nathan: NIV 3 But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying: CEB 4 Go to my servant David and tell him, This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build the temple for me to live in. NIV 4 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. CEB 5 In fact, I haven't lived in a temple from the day I brought Israel out until this very day. I've been traveling from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. NIV 5 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. CEB 6 Throughout my traveling with the Israelites, did I ever ask one of Israel's tribal leaders, whom I appointed to shepherd my people, Why haven't you built me a cedar temple? NIV 6 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” ’ CEB 7 So then, say this to my servant David: This is what the LORD of heavenly forces says: I myself took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be leader over my people Israel. NIV 7 “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. CEB 8 I've been with you wherever you've gone. I've eliminated all your enemies before you. Now I will make your name great—like the name of the greatest people on earth. NIV 8 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. CEB 9 I'm going to provide a place for my people Israel, and plant them so that they may live there and no longer be disturbed. Cruel people will no longer trouble them as they did earlier, NIV 9 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning CEB 10 when I appointed judges over my people Israel. I'll subdue all your enemies and make you great. As for a dynasty, the LORD will build one for you! NIV 10 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies. “ ‘I declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you: CEB 11 When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up a descendant of yours after you, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingship. NIV 11 When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. CEB 12 He is the one who will build me a temple, and I will establish his throne forever. NIV 12 He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. CEB 13 I will become his father and he will become my son, and I'll never withdraw my faithful love from him as I did from the one before you. NIV 13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. CEB 14 I'll install him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever. NIV 14 I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.’ ” CEB 15 Nathan faithfully reported all that he had seen and heard to David. NIV 15 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation. CEB 16 Then King David went and sat in the LORD's presence. He asked: Who am I, LORD God, and of what significance is my family that you have brought me this far? NIV 16 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? CEB 17 But even this was too small in your eyes, God. You have spoken about the future of your servant's dynasty and have chosen me as an important person, LORD God. NIV 17 And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, LORD God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men. CEB 18 What more can I say to you for honoring your servant? You yourself know your servant. NIV 18 “What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, CEB 19 LORD, for your servant's sake and according to your will, you have done this great thing in order to make all these great things known. NIV 19 LORD. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises. CEB 20 LORD, no one can compare to you, no God except you, just as we have heard with our own ears. NIV 20 “There is no one like you, LORD, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. CEB 21 Who is like your people Israel, a unique nation on the earth, that God redeemed as his own people, establishing a name for yourself by doing great and awesome things, by driving out nations before your people whom you saved from Egypt? NIV 21 And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? CEB 22 You established your people Israel as your own people forever, and you, LORD, became their God. NIV 22 You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, LORD, have become their God. CEB 23 Now, LORD, confirm forever the promise you have made about your servant and his dynasty. Do as you have promised NIV 23 “And now, LORD, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, CEB 24 so that it may be established and so that your name may be made great forever when people say, "The LORD of heavenly forces, the God of Israel, is Israel's God." May your servant David's household be established before you. NIV 24 so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The LORD Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you. CEB 25 You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build him a dynasty. That is why your servant has found the courage to pray this prayer to you. NIV 25 “You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. CEB 26 LORD, you are truly God, and you promised this good thing to your servant. NIV 26 You, LORD, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. CEB 27 So now willingly bless your servant's dynasty so that it might continue forever before you, because you, LORD God, have promised. Let your servant's dynasty be blessed forever by your blessing. NIV 27 Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”
