1 Corinthians 11

WEB 1 Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. NIV 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. WEB 2 Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in all things, and hold firm the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. NIV 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. WEB 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. NIV 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. WEB 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. NIV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. WEB 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonors her head. For it is one and the same thing as if she were shaved. NIV 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. WEB 6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. NIV 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. WEB 7 For a man indeed ought not to have his head covered, because he is the image and glory of God, but the woman is the glory of the man. NIV 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. WEB 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man; NIV 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; WEB 9 for neither was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. NIV 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. WEB 10 For this cause the woman ought to have authority on her head, because of the angels. NIV 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. WEB 11 Nevertheless, neither is the woman independent of the man, nor the man independent of the woman, in the Lord. NIV 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. WEB 12 For as the woman is from the man, so is the man also by the woman; but all things are from God. NIV 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. WEB 13 Judge for yourselves. Is it appropriate that a woman pray to God unveiled? NIV 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? WEB 14 Doesn't even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? NIV 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, WEB 15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given to her for a covering. NIV 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. WEB 16 But if any man seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither do God's assemblies. NIV 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. WEB 17 But in giving you this command, I don't praise you, that you come together not for the better but for the worse. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. WEB 18 For first of all, when you come together in the assembly, I hear that divisions exist among you, and I partly believe it. NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. WEB 19 For there must be also factions among you, that those who are approved may be revealed among you. NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. WEB 20 When therefore you assemble yourselves together, it is not possible to eat the Lord's supper. NIV 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, WEB 21 For in your eating each one takes his own supper before others. One is hungry, and another is drunken. NIV 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. WEB 22 What, don't you have houses to eat and to drink in? Or do you despise God's assembly, and put them to shame who don't have? What will I tell you? Will I praise you? In this I don't praise you. NIV 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! WEB 23 For I received from the Lord that which also I delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread. NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, WEB 24 When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in memory of me." NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” WEB 25 In the same way he also took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink, in memory of me." NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” WEB 26 For as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. WEB 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks the Lord's cup in an unworthy manner, will be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. NIV 27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. WEB 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup. NIV 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. WEB 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, if he doesn't discern the Lord's body. NIV 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. WEB 30 For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. WEB 31 For if we discerned ourselves, we wouldn't be judged. NIV 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. WEB 32 But when we are judged, we are punished by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world. NIV 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. WEB 33 Therefore, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait one for another. NIV 33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. WEB 34 But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, that your coming together may not be to judgment. The rest I will set in order whenever I come. NIV 34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
