1 Peter 2

ESV 1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. MSG 1 So clean house! Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk. ESV 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation-- MSG 2 Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God's pure kindness. Then you'll grow up mature and whole in God. ESV 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. MSG 3 You've had a taste of God. ESV 4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, MSG 4 Welcome to the living Stone, the source of life. The workmen took one look and threw it out; God set it in the place of honor. ESV 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. MSG 5 Present yourselves as building stones for the construction of a sanctuary vibrant with life, in which you'll serve as holy priests offering Christ-approved lives up to God. ESV 6 For it stands in Scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." MSG 6 The Scriptures provide precedent: Look! I'm setting a stone in Zion, a cornerstone in the place of honor. Whoever trusts in this stone as a foundation will never have cause to regret it. ESV 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone," MSG 7 To you who trust him, he's a Stone to be proud of, but to those who refuse to trust him, The stone the workmen threw out is now the chief foundation stone. ESV 8 and "A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense. "They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. MSG 8 For the untrusting it's . . . a stone to trip over, a boulder blocking the way. They trip and fall because they refuse to obey, just as predicted. ESV 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. MSG 9 But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God's instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you - ESV 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. MSG 10 from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted. ESV 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. MSG 11 Friends, this world is not your home, so don't make yourselves cozy in it. Don't indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. ESV 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. MSG 12 Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they'll be won over to God's side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives. ESV 13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, MSG 13 Make the Master proud of you by being good citizens. Respect the authorities, whatever their level; ESV 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. MSG 14 they are God's emissaries for keeping order. ESV 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. MSG 15 It is God's will that by doing good, you might cure the ignorance of the fools who think you're a danger to society. ESV 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. MSG 16 Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules. ESV 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. MSG 17 Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government. ESV 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. MSG 18 You who are servants, be good servants to your masters - not just to good masters, but also to bad ones. ESV 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. MSG 19 What counts is that you put up with it for God's sake when you're treated badly for no good reason. ESV 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. MSG 20 There's no particular virtue in accepting punishment that you well deserve. But if you're treated badly for good behavior and continue in spite of it to be a good servant, that is what counts with God. ESV 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. MSG 21 This is the kind of life you've been invited into, the kind of life Christ lived. He suffered everything that came his way so you would know that it could be done, and also know how to do it, step-by-step. ESV 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. MSG 22 He never did one thing wrong, Not once said anything amiss. ESV 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. MSG 23 They called him every name in the book and he said nothing back. He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right. ESV 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. MSG 24 He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. ESV 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. MSG 25 You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going. Now you're named and kept for good by the Shepherd of your souls.
