1 Peter 3

ESV 1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, MSG 1 The same goes for you wives: Be good wives to your husbands, responsive to their needs. There are husbands who, indifferent as they are to any words about God, will be captivated ESV 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. MSG 2 by your life of holy beauty. ESV 3 Do not let your adorning be external--the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear-- MSG 3 What matters is not your outer appearance - the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes - ESV 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. MSG 4 but your inner disposition. ESV 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, MSG 5 The holy women of old were beautiful before God that way, and were good, loyal wives to their husbands. ESV 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. MSG 6 Sarah, for instance, taking care of Abraham, would address him as "my dear husband." You'll be true daughters of Sarah if you do the same, unanxious and unintimidated. ESV 7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. MSG 7 The same goes for you husbands: Be good husbands to your wives. Honor them, delight in them. As women they lack some of your advantages. But in the new life of God's grace, you're equals. Treat your wives, then, as equals so your prayers don't run aground. Suffering for Doing Good ESV 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. MSG 8 Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. ESV 9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. MSG 9 That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless - that's your job, to bless. You'll be a blessing and also get a blessing. ESV 10 For "Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; MSG 10 Whoever wants to embrace life and see the day fill up with good, Here's what you do: Say nothing evil or hurtful; ESV 11 let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. MSG 11 Snub evil and cultivate good; run after peace for all you're worth. ESV 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." MSG 12 God looks on all this with approval, listening and responding well to what he's asked; But he turns his back on those who do evil things. ESV 13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? MSG 13 If with heart and soul you're doing good, do you think you can be stopped? ESV 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, MSG 14 Even if you suffer for it, you're still better off. Don't give the opposition a second thought. ESV 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, MSG 15 Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you're living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. ESV 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. MSG 16 Keep a clear conscience before God so that when people throw mud at you, none of it will stick. They'll end up realizing that they're the ones who need a bath. ESV 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil. MSG 17 It's better to suffer for doing good, if that's what God wants, than to be punished for doing bad. ESV 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, MSG 18 That's what Christ did definitively: suffered because of others' sins, the Righteous One for the unrighteous ones. He went through it all - was put to death and then made alive - to bring us to God. ESV 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, MSG 19 He went and proclaimed God's salvation to earlier generations who ended up in the prison of judgment ESV 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. MSG 20 because they wouldn't listen. You know, even though God waited patiently all the days that Noah built his ship, only a few were saved then, eight to be exact - saved from the water by the water. ESV 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, MSG 21 The waters of baptism do that for you, not by washing away dirt from your skin but by presenting you through Jesus' resurrection before God with a clear conscience. ESV 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. MSG 22 Jesus has the last word on everything and everyone, from angels to armies. He's standing right alongside God, and what he says goes.
