1 Peter 5

MSG 1 I have a special concern for you church leaders. I know what it's like to be a leader, in on Christ's sufferings as well as the coming glory. ESV 1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: MSG 2 Here's my concern: that you care for God's flock with all the diligence of a shepherd. Not because you have to, but because you want to please God. Not calculating what you can get out of it, but acting spontaneously.[ ESV 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;not for shameful gain, but eagerly; MSG 3 Not bossily telling others what to do, but tenderly showing them the way. ESV 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. MSG 4 When God, who is the best shepherd of all, comes out in the open with his rule, he'll see that you've done it right and commend you lavishly. ESV 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. MSG 5 And you who are younger must follow your leaders. But all of you, leaders and followers alike, are to be down to earth with each other, for - God has had it with the proud, But takes delight in just plain people. ESV 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." MSG 6 So be content with who you are, and don't put on airs. God's strong hand is on you; he'll promote you at the right time. ESV 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, MSG 7 Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you. ESV 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. MSG 8 Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. ESV 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. MSG 9 Keep your guard up. You're not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It's the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. ESV 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. MSG 10 The suffering won't last forever. It won't be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ - eternal and glorious plans they are! - will have you put together and on your feet for good. ESV 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. MSG 11 He gets the last word; yes, he does. ESV 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. MSG 12 I'm sending this brief letter to you by Silas, a most dependable brother. I have the highest regard for him. I've written as urgently and accurately as I know how. This is God's generous truth; embrace it with both arms! ESV 12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. MSG 13 The church in exile here with me - but not for a moment forgotten by God - wants to be remembered to you. Mark, who is like a son to me, says hello. ESV 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. MSG 14 Give holy embraces all around! Peace to you - to all who walk in Christ's ways. ESV 14 Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
