1 John 2:1-10

MSG 1 I write this, dear children, to guide you out of sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a Priest-Friend in the presence of the Father: Jesus Christ, righteous Jesus. NIV 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. MSG 2 When he served as a sacrifice for our sins, he solved the sin problem for good - not only ours, but the whole world's. NIV 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. MSG 3 Here's how we can be sure that we know God in the right way: Keep his commandments. NIV 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. MSG 4 If someone claims, "I know him well!" but doesn't keep his commandments, he's obviously a liar. His life doesn't match his words. NIV 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. MSG 5 But the one who keeps God's word is the person in whom we see God's mature love. This is the only way to be sure we're in God. NIV 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: MSG 6 Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived. NIV 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. MSG 7 My dear friends, I'm not writing anything new here. This is the oldest commandment in the book, and you've known it from day one. It's always been implicit in the Message you've heard. NIV 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. MSG 8 On the other hand, perhaps it is new, freshly minted as it is in both Christ and you - the darkness on its way out and the True Light already blazing! NIV 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. MSG 9 Anyone who claims to live in God's light and hates a brother or sister is still in the dark. NIV 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. MSG 10 It's the person who loves brother and sister who dwells in God's light and doesn't block the light from others. NIV 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.
