1 John 2:1-9

NRSA 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; NIV 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. NRSA 2 and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. NIV 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. NRSA 3 Now by this we may be sure that we know him, if we obey his commandments. NIV 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. NRSA 4 Whoever says, "I have come to know him," but does not obey his commandments, is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; NIV 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. NRSA 5 but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we may be sure that we are in him: NIV 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: NRSA 6 whoever says, "I abide in him," ought to walk just as he walked. NIV 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. NRSA 7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. NIV 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. NRSA 8 Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. NIV 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. NRSA 9 Whoever says, "I am in the light," while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. NIV 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.
