1 Kings 11:1-11

ESV 1 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, NIV 1 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. ESV 2 from the nations concerning which the LORD had said to the people of Israel, "You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love. NIV 2 They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. ESV 3 He had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. NIV 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. ESV 4 For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. NIV 4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been. ESV 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. NIV 5 He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. ESV 6 So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and did not wholly follow the LORD, as David his father had done. NIV 6 So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not follow the LORD completely, as David his father had done. ESV 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. NIV 7 On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. ESV 8 And so he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings and sacrificed to their gods. NIV 8 He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods. ESV 9 And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice NIV 9 The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. ESV 10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the LORD commanded. NIV 10 Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the LORD’s command. ESV 11 Therefore the LORD said to Solomon, "Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. NIV 11 So the LORD said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.
