The Message Bible

English Standard Version

1 Peter 4:1-6

MSG 1 Since Jesus went through everything you're going through and more, learn to think like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way. ESV 1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, MSG 2 Then you'll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want. ESV 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. MSG 3 You've already put in your time in that God-ignorant way of life, partying night after night, a drunken and profligate life. Now it's time to be done with it for good. ESV 3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. MSG 4 Of course, your old friends don't understand why you don't join in with the old gang anymore. But you don't have to give an account to them. ESV 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; MSG 5 They're the ones who will be called on the carpet - and before God himself. ESV 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. MSG 6 Listen to the Message. It was preached to those believers who are now dead, and yet even though they died (just as all people must), they will still get in on the life that God has given in Jesus. ESV 6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
