1 Timothy 1

RSVA 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, NIV 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, RSVA 2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. NIV 2 To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. RSVA 3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, NIV 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer RSVA 4 nor to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies which promote speculations rather than the divine training that is in faith; NIV 4 or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. RSVA 5 whereas the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. NIV 5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. RSVA 6 Certain persons by swerving from these have wandered away into vain discussion, NIV 6 Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. RSVA 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions. NIV 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. RSVA 8 Now we know that the law is good, if any one uses it lawfully, NIV 8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. RSVA 9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, NIV 9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, RSVA 10 immoral persons, sodomites, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, NIV 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine RSVA 11 in accordance with the glorious gospel of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. NIV 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. RSVA 12 I thank him who has given me strength for this, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful by appointing me to his service, NIV 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. RSVA 13 though I formerly blasphemed and persecuted and insulted him; but I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, NIV 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. RSVA 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. NIV 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. RSVA 15 The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the foremost of sinners; NIV 15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. RSVA 16 but I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience for an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. NIV 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. RSVA 17 To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. NIV 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. RSVA 18 This charge I commit to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophetic utterances which pointed to you, that inspired by them you may wage the good warfare, NIV 18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, RSVA 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith, NIV 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. RSVA 20 among them Hymenae'us and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. NIV 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.
