1 En el año dieciocho del reinado de Jeroboán, Abías ascendió al trono de Judá

In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah,
2 y reinó en Jerusalén tres años. Su madre era Micaías, hija de Uriel de Guibeá.Hubo guerra entre Abías y Jeroboán.

and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Maakah, a daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
3 Para ir al combate, Abías escogió a cuatrocientos mil guerreros valientes; Jeroboán, por su parte, escogió a ochocientos mil y le hizo frente.

Abijah went into battle with an army of four hundred thousand able fighting men, and Jeroboam drew up a battle line against him with eight hundred thousand able troops.
4 Abías subió al monte Zemarayin, en la sierra de Efraín, y gritó: «¡Jeroboán! ¡Israelitas! ¡Escúchenme todos ustedes!

Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Jeroboam and all Israel, listen to me!
5 ¿No saben que el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, concedió para siempre el reino de Israel a David y a sus descendientes mediante un pacto inalterable?

Don’t you know that the LORD, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt?
6 Sin embargo, Jeroboán hijo de Nabat, oficial de Salomón hijo de David, se rebeló contra su señor.

Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, an official of Solomon son of David, rebelled against his master.
7 Unos hombres ociosos y malvados se unieron a Roboán hijo de Salomón, cuando este era joven y débil de carácter, y se le impusieron, de modo que no pudo hacerles frente.

Some worthless scoundrels gathered around him and opposed Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young and indecisive and not strong enough to resist them.
8 »Ustedes piensan que ahora, por ser muy numerosos y por tener los becerros de oro, esos ídolos que Jeroboán les hizo pueden oponerse al reino del SEÑOR, aunque él se lo ha entregado a los hijos de David.

“And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast army and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made to be your gods.
9 ¡Hasta expulsaron a los descendientes de Aarón, que son los sacerdotes del SEÑOR, y a los levitas! En su lugar han nombrado sacerdotes, y a cualquiera que trae un ternero y siete carneros lo consagran como sacerdote de los dioses falsos, tal como lo hacen los pueblos paganos.

But didn’t you drive out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make priests of your own as the peoples of other lands do? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may become a priest of what are not gods.
10 »Nosotros, en cambio, no hemos abandonado al SEÑOR, porque él es nuestro Dios. Los descendientes de Aarón siguen siendo nuestros sacerdotes que sirven al SEÑOR, y los levitas son los encargados del culto.

“As for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The priests who serve the LORD are sons of Aaron, and the Levites assist them.
11 Todos los días, por la mañana y por la tarde, ofrecen al SEÑOR los holocaustos y queman el incienso; además, todas las tardes colocan el pan consagrado sobre la mesa de oro puro, y encienden las lámparas del candelabro de oro. Dense cuenta de que nosotros sí mantenemos el culto al SEÑOR nuestro Dios, a quien ustedes han abandonado.

Every morning and evening they present burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the LORD. They set out the bread on the ceremonially clean table and light the lamps on the gold lampstand every evening. We are observing the requirements of the LORD our God. But you have forsaken him.
12 Así que Dios, con sus sacerdotes, va al frente de nosotros. ¡Las trompetas están listas para dar la orden de ataque contra ustedes! ¡Israelitas, no peleen contra el SEÑOR, Dios de sus antepasados, pues no podrán vencerlo!»

God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you. People of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.”
13 Para tenderle una emboscada a Abías, Jeroboán situó parte de sus tropas detrás del ejército de Judá, mientras que al resto de sus tropas lo mandó al frente.

Now Jeroboam had sent troops around to the rear, so that while he was in front of Judah the ambush was behind them.
14 Cuando los de Judá miraron hacia atrás, se dieron cuenta de que los israelitas los atacaban también por la retaguardia. Entonces clamaron al SEÑOR, y los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas.

Judah turned and saw that they were being attacked at both front and rear. Then they cried out to the LORD. The priests blew their trumpets
15 En el momento en que los de Judá lanzaron el grito de guerra, Dios derrotó a Jeroboán y a los israelitas, dándoles la victoria a Abías y Judá.

and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. At the sound of their battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
16 Los israelitas intentaron huir, pero Dios los entregó al poder de Judá.

The Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands.
17 Abías y su ejército les ocasionaron una gran derrota, matando a quinientos mil soldados selectos de Israel.

Abijah and his troops inflicted heavy losses on them, so that there were five hundred thousand casualties among Israel’s able men.
18 En esa ocasión fueron humillados los israelitas, mientras que los de Judá salieron victoriosos porque confiaron en el SEÑOR, Dios de sus antepasados.

The Israelites were subdued on that occasion, and the people of Judah were victorious because they relied on the LORD, the God of their ancestors.
19 Abías persiguió a Jeroboán y le arrebató las ciudades de Betel, Jesaná y Efraín, con sus respectivas aldeas.

Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took from him the towns of Bethel, Jeshanah and Ephron, with their surrounding villages.
20 Durante el reinado de Abías, Jeroboán no pudo recuperar su poderío. Al final, el SEÑOR lo hirió, y Jeroboán murió.

Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah. And the LORD struck him down and he died.
21 Abías, en cambio, siguió afirmándose en el trono. Tuvo catorce esposas, veintidós hijos y dieciséis hijas.

But Abijah grew in strength. He married fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
22 Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Abías, y su conducta y sus obras, están escritos en el comentario del profeta Idó.
