2 Enseguida envió a Eliaquim, administrador del palacio; a Sebna, secretario de la corte; y a los principales sacerdotes, todos vestidos de tela áspera, a hablar con el profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz.

3 Ellos le dijeron: «El rey Ezequías dice: “Hoy es un día de dificultad, insulto y deshonra. Es como cuando un niño está a punto de nacer, pero la madre no tiene fuerzas para dar a luz.

4 Tal vez el Señor<br /> tu Dios haya oído al jefe del Estado Mayor<br /> asirio, que fue enviado por el rey para desafiar al Dios viviente, y lo castigue por sus palabras. ¡Te rogamos que ores por los que hemos quedado!”».

5 Una vez que los funcionarios del rey Ezequías le dieron a Isaías el mensaje del rey,

6 el profeta respondió: «Díganle a su amo: “Esto dice el Señor<br />: ‘No te alteres por ese discurso blasfemo que han pronunciado contra mí los mensajeros del rey de Asiria.

7 ¡Escucha! Yo mismo actuaré en su contra,<br /> y el rey recibirá un mensaje de que lo necesitan en su país. Así que volverá a su tierra, donde haré que lo maten a filo de espada’”».

8 Mientras tanto, el jefe del Estado Mayor asirio partió de Jerusalén para consultar al rey de Asiria, quien había salido de Laquis y estaba atacando a Libna.

9 Poco después, el rey Senaquerib recibió la noticia de que el rey Tirhaca de Etiopía<br /> iba al frente de un ejército para luchar contra él. Antes de salir al encuentro de sus agresores, envió mensajeros de regreso a Ezequías, en Jerusalén, con el siguiente mensaje:

10 «Este mensaje está dirigido al rey Ezequías de Judá. No dejes que tu Dios, en quien confías, te engañe con promesas de que Jerusalén no caerá en manos del rey de Asiria.

11 Tú sabes perfectamente bien lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria en todos los lugares donde han ido. ¡Han destruido por completo a todo aquel que se ha interpuesto en su camino! ¿Por qué serías tú la excepción?

12 ¿Acaso los dioses de otras naciones las han rescatado, naciones como Gozán, Harán, Resef y el pueblo de Edén que vivía en Telasar? ¡Mis antecesores los destruyeron a todos!

13 ¿Qué sucedió con el rey de Hamat y el rey de Arfad? ¿Qué les pasó a los reyes de Sefarvaim, de Hena y de Iva?».

14 Después de recibir la carta de mano de los mensajeros y de leerla, Ezequías subió al templo del Señor<br /> y desplegó la carta ante el Señor<br />.

15 En presencia del Señor<br />, el rey hizo la siguiente oración: «¡Oh Señor<br />, Dios de Israel, tú estás entronizado entre los poderosos querubines! Solo tú eres el Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra. Solo tú creaste los cielos y la tierra.

16 ¡Inclínate, oh Señor<br />, y escucha! ¡Abre tus ojos, oh Señor<br />, y mira! Escucha las palabras desafiantes de Senaquerib contra el Dios viviente.

17 »Es cierto, Señor<br />, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido a todas esas naciones.

18 Han arrojado al fuego a los dioses de esas naciones y los han quemado. ¡Por supuesto que los asirios pudieron destruirlos, pues no eran dioses en absoluto! Eran solo ídolos de madera y de piedra, formados por manos humanas.

19 Ahora, oh Señor<br /> nuestro Dios, rescátanos de su poder; así todos los reinos de la tierra sabrán que solo tú, oh Señor<br />, eres Dios».

20 Isaías predice la liberación de Judá<br />Después, Isaías, hijo de Amoz, le envió a Ezequías el siguiente mensaje: «Esto dice el Señor<br />, Dios de Israel: “He oído tu oración con respecto al rey Senaquerib de Asiria,

21 y el Señor<br /> ha pronunciado estas palabras en su contra:<br />»”La hija virgen de Sión<br />te desprecia y se ríe de ti.<br />La hija de Jerusalén<br />menea la cabeza con desdén mientras tú huyes.

22 »”¿A quién has estado desafiando y ridiculizando?<br />¿Contra quién levantaste la voz?<br />¿A quién miraste con ojos tan arrogantes?<br />¡Fue al Santo de Israel!

23 Por medio de tus mensajeros, has desafiado al Señor.<br />Dijiste: ‘Con mis numerosos carros de guerra<br />conquisté las montañas más altas,<br />sí, las cimas más remotas del Líbano.<br />Corté sus cedros más altos<br />y sus mejores cipreses.<br />Alcancé sus rincones más lejanos<br />y exploré sus bosques más espesos.

24 Cavé pozos en muchas tierras extranjeras<br />y me refresqué con sus aguas.<br />¡Con la planta de mi pie<br />detuve todos los ríos de Egipto!’.

25 »”Pero ¿acaso no has oído?<br />Yo lo decidí hace mucho tiempo.<br />Hace mucho que lo planifiqué,<br />y ahora lo llevo a cabo.<br />Yo determiné que tú aplastaras ciudades fortificadas<br />y las redujeras a un montón de escombros.

26 Por eso sus habitantes tienen tan poco poder<br />y están tan asustados y confundidos.<br />Son tan débiles como la hierba,<br />tan fáciles de pisotear como tiernos brotes verdes.<br />Son como hierba que sale en el techo de una casa,<br />que se quema antes de poder crecer alta y lozana.

27 »”Pero a ti te conozco bien:<br />sé dónde te encuentras,<br />y cuándo entras y sales.<br />Conozco la forma en que desataste tu furia contra mí.

28 Por esa furia en mi contra<br />y por tu arrogancia, que yo mismo oí,<br />te pondré mi gancho en la nariz<br />y mi freno en la boca.<br />Te haré regresar<br />por el mismo camino por donde viniste”».

29 Luego Isaías le dijo a Ezequías: «Esta es la prueba de que es cierto lo que digo:<br />»Este año ustedes solo comerán lo que crezca por sí mismo,<br />y el año próximo comerán lo que de eso brote.<br />Sin embargo, el tercer año, plantarán cultivos y los cosecharán;<br />cuidarán de sus viñedos y comerán de su fruto.

30 Y ustedes, los que quedan en Judá,<br />los que han escapado de los estragos del ataque,<br />echarán raíces en su propio suelo,<br />crecerán y prosperarán.

31 Pues desde Jerusalén se extenderá un remanente de mi pueblo,<br />un grupo de sobrevivientes, desde el monte Sión.<br />¡El ferviente compromiso del Señor<br /> de los Ejércitos Celestiales<br />hará que esto suceda!

32 »Y esto dice el Señor<br /> acerca del rey de Asiria:<br />»“Sus ejércitos no entrarán en Jerusalén;<br />ni siquiera lanzarán una sola flecha contra ella.<br />No marcharán fuera de sus puertas con sus escudos<br />ni levantarán terraplenes contra sus murallas.

33 El rey regresará a su propia tierra<br />por el mismo camino por donde vino.<br />No entrará en esta ciudad<br />—dice el Señor<br />—.

34 Por mi propia honra y por amor a mi siervo David,<br />defenderé esta ciudad y la protegeré”».

35 Esa noche el ángel del Señor<br /> fue al campamento asirio y mató a 185.000 soldados. Cuando los asirios que sobrevivieron<br /> se despertaron a la mañana siguiente, encontraron cadáveres por todas partes.

36 Entonces Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, levantó campamento y regresó a su propia tierra. Volvió a Nínive, la capital del reino, y allí se quedó.

37 Cierto día, mientras rendía culto en el templo de su dios Nisroc, sus hijos<br /> Adramelec y Sarezer lo mataron a espada. Luego escaparon a la tierra de Ararat, y otro de sus hijos, Esar-hadón, lo sucedió en el trono de Asiria.

1 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the LORD.

2 He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.

3 They told him, “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment of birth and there is no strength to deliver them.

4 It may be that the LORD your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the LORD your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives.”

5 When King Hezekiah’s officials came to Isaiah,

6 Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard—those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.’ ”

8 When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.

9 Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush, was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word:

10 “Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, ‘Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.’

11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered?

12 Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver them—the gods of Gozan, Harran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar?

13 Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?”

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.

15 And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD: “LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.

16 Give ear, LORD, and hear; open your eyes, LORD, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.

17 “It is true, LORD, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands.

18 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.

19 Now, LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, LORD, are God.”

20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria.

21 This is the word that the LORD has spoken against him: “ ‘Virgin Daughter Zion despises you and mocks you. Daughter Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee.

22 Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!

23 By your messengers you have ridiculed the Lord. And you have said, “With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its junipers. I have reached its remotest parts, the finest of its forests.

24 I have dug wells in foreign lands and drunk the water there. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”

25 “ ‘Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone.

26 Their people, drained of power, are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, scorched before it grows up.

27 “ ‘But I know where you are and when you come and go and how you rage against me.

28 Because you rage against me and because your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.’

29 “This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah: “This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

30 Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above.

31 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. “The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

32 “Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria: “ ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it.

33 By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city, declares the LORD.

34 I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.’ ”

35 That night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!

36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there.

37 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.
