2 Samuel 12:1-15

CEB 1 So the LORD sent Nathan to David. When Nathan arrived he said, “There were two men in the same city, one rich, one poor. NRS 1 and the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. CEB 2 The rich man had a lot of sheep and cattle, NRS 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds; CEB 3 but the poor man had nothing—just one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised that lamb, and it grew up with him and his children. It would eat from his food and drink from his cup—even sleep in his arms! It was like a daughter to him. NRS 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his meager fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. CEB 4 "Now a traveler came to visit the rich man, but he wasn't willing to take anything from his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had arrived. Instead, he took the poor man's ewe lamb and prepared it for the visitor." NRS 4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him." CEB 5 David got very angry at the man, and he said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives, the one who did this is demonic! NRS 5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, "As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; CEB 6 He must restore the ewe lamb seven times over because he did this and because he had no compassion." NRS 6 he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity." CEB 7 "You are that man!" Nathan told David. “This is what the LORD God of Israel says: I anointed you king over Israel and delivered you from Saul's power. NRS 7 Nathan said to David, "You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul; CEB 8 I gave your master's house to you, and gave his wives into your embrace. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. If that was too little, I would have given even more. NRS 8 I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more. CEB 9 Why have you despised the LORD's word by doing what is evil in his eyes? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and taken his wife as your own. You used the Ammonites to kill him. NRS 9 Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. CEB 10 Because of that, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite as your own, the sword will never leave your own house. NRS 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, for you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. CEB 11 "This is what the LORD says: I am making trouble come against you from inside your own family. Before your very eyes I will take your wives away and give them to your friend, and he will have sex with your wives in broad daylight. NRS 11 Thus says the Lord: I will raise up trouble against you from within your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this very sun. CEB 12 You did what you did secretly, but I will do what I am doing before all Israel in the light of day." NRS 12 For you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun." CEB 13 "I've sinned against the LORD!" David said to Nathan. "The LORD has removed your sin," Nathan replied to David. "You won't die. NRS 13 David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan said to David, "Now the Lord has put away your sin; you shall not die. CEB 14 However, because you have utterly disrespected the LORD by doing this, the son born to you will definitely die." NRS 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child that is born to you shall die." CEB 15 Then Nathan went home. The LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne for David, and he became very sick. NRS 15 Then Nathan went to his house. The Lord struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it became very ill.
