CEBA 1 So the LORD sent Nathan to David. When Nathan arrived he said, “There were two men in the same city, one rich, one poor. NIV 1 The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. CEBA 2 The rich man had a lot of sheep and cattle, NIV 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, CEBA 3 but the poor man had nothing—just one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised that lamb, and it grew up with him and his children. It would eat from his food and drink from his cup—even sleep in his arms! It was like a daughter to him. NIV 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. CEBA 4 "Now a traveler came to visit the rich man, but he wasn't willing to take anything from his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had arrived. Instead, he took the poor man's ewe lamb and prepared it for the visitor." NIV 4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.” CEBA 5 David got very angry at the man, and he said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives, the one who did this is demonic! NIV 5 David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this must die! CEBA 6 He must restore the ewe lamb seven times over because he did this and because he had no compassion." NIV 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.” CEBA 7 "You are that man!" Nathan told David. “This is what the LORD God of Israel says: I anointed you king over Israel and delivered you from Saul's power. NIV 7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. CEBA 8 I gave your master's house to you, and gave his wives into your embrace. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. If that was too little, I would have given even more. NIV 8 I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. CEBA 9 Why have you despised the LORD's word by doing what is evil in his eyes? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and taken his wife as your own. You used the Ammonites to kill him. NIV 9 Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. CEBA 10 Because of that, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite as your own, the sword will never leave your own house. NIV 10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’ CEBA 11 "This is what the LORD says: I am making trouble come against you from inside your own family. Before your very eyes I will take your wives away and give them to your friend, and he will have sex with your wives in broad daylight. NIV 11 “This is what the LORD says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. CEBA 12 You did what you did secretly, but I will do what I am doing before all Israel in the light of day." NIV 12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’ ” CEBA 13 "I've sinned against the LORD!" David said to Nathan. "The LORD has removed your sin," Nathan replied to David. "You won't die. NIV 13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. CEBA 14 However, because you have utterly disrespected the LORD by doing this, the son born to you will definitely die." NIV 14 But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the LORD, the son born to you will die.”
