Acts 11:1-18

NIV 1 The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. NRS 1 Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. NIV 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him NRS 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, NIV 3 and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.” NRS 3 saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?" NIV 4 Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story: NRS 4 Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, NIV 5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was. NRS 5 "I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. NIV 6 I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. NRS 6 As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. NIV 7 Then I heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’ NRS 7 I also heard a voice saying to me, "Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' NIV 8 “I replied, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ NRS 8 But I replied, "By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' NIV 9 “The voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’ NRS 9 But a second time the voice answered from heaven, "What God has made clean, you must not call profane.' NIV 10 This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again. NRS 10 This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. NIV 11 “Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. NRS 11 At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. NIV 12 The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. NRS 12 The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. NIV 13 He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. NRS 13 He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, "Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; NIV 14 He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.’ NRS 14 he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.' NIV 15 “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. NRS 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. NIV 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized withwater, but you will be baptized withthe Holy Spirit.’ NRS 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, "John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' NIV 17 So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?” NRS 17 If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?" NIV 18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.” NRS 18 When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, "Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life."
