1 Sueño del rey Nabucodonosor<br />Una noche, durante el segundo año de su reinado,<br /> Nabucodonosor tuvo unos sueños tan desconcertantes que no pudo dormir.

2 Mandó llamar a sus magos, brujos, hechiceros y astrólogos,<br /> y les exigió que le dijeran lo que había soñado. Cuando se presentaron ante el rey,

3 les dijo:<br />—He tenido un sueño que me desconcierta mucho y necesito saber lo que significa.

4 Entonces los astrólogos respondieron al rey en arameo:<br />—¡Que viva el rey! Cuéntenos el sueño y nosotros le diremos lo que significa.

5 Pero el rey respondió a los astrólogos:<br />—Les digo esto en serio. Si no me dicen lo que soñé y lo que significa, ¡los haré despedazar y convertiré sus casas en un montón de escombros!

6 Pero si me dicen lo que soñé y lo que significa, les daré muchos honores y regalos maravillosos. ¡Solo díganme lo que soñé y lo que significa!

7 Ellos volvieron a decirle:<br />—Por favor, su Majestad, cuéntenos el sueño y nosotros le diremos lo que significa.

8 El rey respondió:<br />—¡Ya sé lo que se proponen! Están tratando de ganar tiempo porque saben que hablo en serio cuando digo:

9 “¡Si no me cuentan el sueño, están condenados!”. Así que han conspirado para mentirme, con la esperanza de que yo cambie de idea, pero cuéntenme el sueño y entonces sabré que pueden explicarme el significado.

10 Los astrólogos respondieron al rey:<br />—¡No hay nadie en la tierra que pueda decirle al rey lo que soñó! ¡Y ningún rey, por grande y poderoso que sea, jamás pidió tal cosa a sus magos, brujos o astrólogos!

11 Es imposible cumplir con lo que el rey exige. Nadie, excepto los dioses, puede contar al rey su sueño, pero los dioses no habitan entre los hombres.

12 Cuando el rey oyó esto, se enfureció y mandó a ejecutar a todos los sabios de Babilonia.

13 Entonces, debido al decreto del rey, enviaron hombres para que encontraran y mataran a Daniel y a sus amigos.

14 Cuando Arioc, comandante de la guardia real, llegó a matarlos, Daniel manejó la situación con sabiduría y discreción.

15 Le preguntó a Arioc: «¿Por qué emitió el rey un decreto tan severo?». Entonces Arioc le contó todo lo que había sucedido.

16 Daniel fue a ver al rey inmediatamente y le pidió más tiempo para comunicarle el significado del sueño.

17 Entonces Daniel regresó a casa y contó a sus amigos Ananías, Misael y Azarías lo que había ocurrido.

18 Les rogó que pidieran al Dios del cielo que tuviera misericordia y les revelara el secreto, para que no fueran ejecutados junto con los demás sabios de Babilonia.

19 Esa noche el misterio le fue revelado a Daniel en una visión. Entonces alabó al Dios del cielo

20 y dijo:<br />«Alabado sea el nombre de Dios por siempre y para siempre,<br />porque a él pertenecen toda la sabiduría y todo el poder.

21 Él controla el curso de los sucesos del mundo;<br />él quita reyes y pone otros reyes.<br />Él da sabiduría a los sabios<br />y conocimiento a los estudiosos.

22 Él revela cosas profundas y misteriosas<br />y conoce lo que se oculta en la oscuridad,<br />aunque él está rodeado de luz.

23 Te agradezco y te alabo, Dios de mis antepasados,<br />porque me has dado sabiduría y fortaleza.<br />Me revelaste lo que te pedimos<br />y nos diste a conocer lo que el rey exigía».

24 Daniel interpreta el sueño<br />Entonces Daniel fue a ver a Arioc, a quien el rey había ordenado ejecutar a los sabios de Babilonia. Daniel le dijo: «No mates a los sabios. Llévame ante el rey y le explicaré el significado de su sueño».

25 Enseguida Arioc llevó a Daniel ante el rey y anunció: «¡Entre los cautivos de Judá, encontré a uno que le dirá al rey el significado de su sueño!».

26 Entonces el rey le preguntó a Daniel (también llamado Beltsasar):<br />—¿Es cierto? ¿Puedes decirme lo que soñé y lo que mi sueño significa?

27 Daniel contestó:<br />—No hay sabios, brujos, magos ni adivinos que puedan dar a conocer el secreto del rey;

28 pero hay un Dios en el cielo, quien revela secretos y le ha dado a conocer al rey Nabucodonosor lo que ocurrirá en el futuro. Ahora le diré lo que soñó y las visiones que vio mientras estaba acostado en su cama.

29 »Mientras su Majestad dormía, soñó sobre sucesos futuros. Aquel que da a conocer los secretos le ha mostrado a usted lo que ocurrirá.

30 Y no es porque yo sea más sabio que los demás que conozco el secreto de su sueño, sino porque Dios quiere que su Majestad entienda lo que estaba en su corazón cuando soñó.

31 »En su visión, su Majestad vio frente a sí una enorme estatua resplandeciente de un hombre; daba terror verla.

32 La cabeza de la estatua era de oro fino. El pecho y los brazos eran de plata, el vientre y los muslos de bronce,

33 las piernas eran de hierro y los pies eran una mezcla de hierro y barro cocido.

34 Mientras usted observaba, una roca de una montaña fue cortada, pero no por manos humanas. La roca golpeó los pies de hierro y barro, y los hizo pedazos.

35 La estatua quedó reducida a pequeños trozos de hierro, barro, bronce, plata y oro. Luego el viento se los llevó sin dejar rastro alguno, como la paja cuando se trilla el grano. Sin embargo, la roca que derrumbó la estatua se convirtió en una gran montaña que cubrió toda la tierra.

36 »Ese fue el sueño. Ahora explicaremos al rey el significado.

37 Su Majestad, usted es supremo entre los reyes. El Dios del cielo le ha dado soberanía, poder, fuerza y honra.

38 Dios lo ha puesto como gobernante sobre todo el mundo habitado y le ha dado dominio aun sobre las aves y los animales salvajes. Usted es la cabeza de oro.

39 »Ahora bien, después de que termine su reino, surgirá otro reino, inferior al suyo, y ocupará su lugar. Cuando este caiga, un tercer reino, representado por el bronce, surgirá para gobernar el mundo.

40 Después vendrá un cuarto reino, tan fuerte como el hierro. Ese reino destrozará y aplastará a todos los imperios anteriores, así como el hierro destroza y aplasta todo lo que golpea.

41 Los pies y los dedos que usted vio eran una combinación de hierro y barro cocido, lo cual demuestra que ese reino se dividirá. Por ser barro mezclado con hierro, tendrá algo de la fuerza del hierro.

42 No obstante, si bien algunas de sus partes serán tan fuertes como el hierro, otras serán tan débiles como el barro.

43 Esta mezcla de hierro con barro también demuestra que esos reinos procurarán fortalecerse al hacer alianzas matrimoniales; pero no se mantendrán unidos, así como el hierro y el barro no se mezclan.

44 »Durante los gobiernos de esos reyes, el Dios del cielo establecerá un reino que jamás será destruido o conquistado. Aplastará por completo a esos reinos y permanecerá para siempre.

45 Ese es el significado de la roca cortada de la montaña, aunque no por manos humanas, que hizo pedazos la estatua de hierro, bronce, barro, plata y oro. El gran Dios estaba mostrando al rey lo que ocurrirá en el futuro. El sueño es verdadero y el significado, seguro.

46 Nabucodonosor recompensa a Daniel<br />Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor se postró ante Daniel y le rindió culto, y mandó al pueblo que ofreciera sacrificios y quemara incienso dulce frente a Daniel.

47 El rey le dijo: «En verdad tu Dios es el más grande de todos los dioses, es el Señor de los reyes, y es quien revela los misterios, porque tú pudiste revelar este secreto».

48 Entonces el rey puso a Daniel en un puesto importante y le dio muchos regalos valiosos. Nombró a Daniel gobernador de toda la provincia de Babilonia y jefe de todos los sabios del rey.

49 A petición de Daniel, el rey puso a Sadrac, Mesac y Abed-nego a cargo de todos los asuntos de la provincia de Babilonia, mientras Daniel permaneció en la corte del rey.

1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep.

2 So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. When they came in and stood before the king,

3 he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means. ”

4 Then the astrologers answered the king, “May the king live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”

5 The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble.

6 But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”

7 Once more they replied, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”

8 Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided:

9 If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me.”

10 The astrologers answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.

11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among humans.”

12 This made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon.

13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.

14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact.

15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel.

16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.

17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven

20 and said: “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his.

21 He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

22 He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.

23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king.”

24 Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.”

25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, “I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can tell the king what his dream means.”

26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar), “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?”

27 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about,

28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you were lying in bed are these:

29 “As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen.

30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.

31 “Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance.

32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze,

33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay.

34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them.

35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.

36 “This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king.

37 Your Majesty, you are the king of kings. The God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory;

38 in your hands he has placed all mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds in the sky. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold.

39 “After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.

40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything—and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others.

41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay.

42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle.

43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.

44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.

45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. “The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him.

47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery.”

48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.

49 Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.
