Deuteronomy 18

CEB 1 Neither the levitical priests nor any Levite tribe member will have a designated inheritance in Israel. They can eat the sacrifices offered to the LORD, which are the LORD's portion, NIV 1 The Levitical priests—indeed, the whole tribe of Levi—are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel. They shall live on the food offerings presented to the LORD, for that is their inheritance. CEB 2 but they won't share an inheritance with their fellow Israelites. The LORD alone is the Levites' inheritance—just as God promised them. NIV 2 They shall have no inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them. CEB 3 Now this is what the priests may keep from the people's sacrifices of oxen or sheep: They must give the priest the shoulder, the jaws, and the stomach. NIV 3 This is the share due the priests from the people who sacrifice a bull or a sheep: the shoulder, the internal organs and the meat from the head. CEB 4 You must also give the priest the first portions of your grain, wine, and oil, and the first of your sheep's shearing NIV 4 You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the first wool from the shearing of your sheep, CEB 5 because the LORD your God selected Levi from all of your tribes to stand and minister in the LORD's name—both him and his descendants for all time. NIV 5 for the LORD your God has chosen them and their descendants out of all your tribes to stand and minister in the LORD’s name always. CEB 6 Now if a Levite leaves one of your cities or departs from any location in Israel where he's been living and, because he wants to, comes to the location the LORD selects NIV 6 If a Levite moves from one of your towns anywhere in Israel where he is living, and comes in all earnestness to the place the LORD will choose, CEB 7 and ministers in the LORD his God's name, just like his relatives—the other Levites serving there in the LORD's presence— NIV 7 he may minister in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who serve there in the presence of the LORD. CEB 8 he is allowed to eat equal portions, despite the finances he has from his family. NIV 8 He is to share equally in their benefits, even though he has received money from the sale of family possessions. CEB 9 Once you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, don't try to imitate the detestable things those nations do. NIV 9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. CEB 10 There must not be anyone among you who passes his son or daughter through fire; who practices divination, is a sign reader, fortune-teller, sorcerer, NIV 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, CEB 11 or spell caster; who converses with ghosts or spirits or communicates with the dead. NIV 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. CEB 12 All who do these things are detestable to the LORD! It is on account of these detestable practices that the LORD your God is driving these nations out before you. NIV 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. CEB 13 Instead, you must be perfect before the LORD your God. NIV 13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God. CEB 14 These nations you are displacing listened to sign readers and diviners, but the LORD your God doesn't permit you to do the same! NIV 14 The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. CEB 15 The LORD your God will raise up a prophet like me from your community, from your fellow Israelites. He's the one you must listen to. NIV 15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. CEB 16 That's exactly what you requested from the LORD your God at Horeb, on the day of the assembly, when you said, "I can't listen to the LORD my God's voice anymore or look at this great fire any longer. I don't want to die!" NIV 16 For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” CEB 17 The LORD said to me: What they've said is right. NIV 17 The LORD said to me: “What they say is good. CEB 18 I'll raise up a prophet for them from among their fellow Israelites—one just like you. I'll put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. NIV 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. CEB 19 I myself will hold accountable anyone who doesn't listen to my words, which that prophet will speak in my name. NIV 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. CEB 20 However, any prophet who arrogantly speaks a word in my name that I haven't commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods—that prophet must die. NIV 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.” CEB 21 Now, you might be wondering, How will we know which word God hasn't spoken? NIV 21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?” CEB 22 Here's the answer: The prophet who speaks in the LORD's name and the thing doesn't happen or come about—that's the word the LORD hasn't spoken. That prophet spoke arrogantly. Don't be afraid of him. NIV 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.
