1 Un decreto para ayudar a los judíos<br />Ese mismo día, el rey Jerjes entregó a la reina Ester las propiedades de Amán, el enemigo de los judíos. Luego llevaron a Mardoqueo ante el rey, porque Ester le había contado al rey el parentesco que había entre ellos.

2 El rey se quitó el anillo con su sello oficial —el cual había recuperado de Amán— y se lo dio a Mardoqueo; y Ester nombró a Mardoqueo como encargado de las propiedades de Amán.

3 Luego Ester volvió a presentarse ante el rey, cayó a sus pies y le suplicó con lágrimas que detuviera el plan siniestro que Amán, el agagueo, había conspirado contra los judíos.

4 Nuevamente el rey extendió su cetro de oro hacia Ester. De modo que ella se levantó y permaneció de pie delante de él.

5 Ester dijo:<br />—Si al rey le place y yo he logrado su favor, y si al rey le parece correcto y yo le resulto agradable, que se emita un decreto que anule las órdenes de Amán, hijo de Hamedata el agagueo, quien ordenó la destrucción de los judíos en todas las provincias del rey.

6 Pues, ¿cómo podría soportar ver a mi pueblo y a mi familia ser masacrados y destruidos?

7 Entonces el rey Jerjes dijo a la reina Ester y a Mardoqueo, el judío:<br />—Le he dado a Ester las propiedades de Amán, a quien atravesaron en un poste porque trató de destruir a los judíos.

8 Ahora envíen un mensaje a los judíos en nombre del rey, que exprese lo que ustedes quieran, y séllenlo con el anillo del rey. Sin embargo, recuerden que todo lo que ya se ha escrito en nombre del rey y lo que se ha sellado con su anillo jamás puede ser revocado.

9 Así que, el 25 de junio,<br /> reunieron a los secretarios del rey, y se escribió un decreto tal como Mardoqueo lo dictó. Lo enviaron a los judíos y a los funcionarios de más alta posición, a los gobernadores y a los nobles de las ciento veintisiete provincias, que se extendían desde la India hasta Etiopía.<br /> Este decreto se escribió en los propios sistemas de escritura y en los propios idiomas de cada pueblo del imperio, incluido el de los judíos.

10 El decreto se redactó en nombre del rey Jerjes y fue sellado con el anillo del rey. Mardoqueo envió los comunicados por medio de mensajeros veloces, quienes montaban caballos rápidos, criados especialmente para el servicio del rey.

11 El decreto del rey les daba autoridad a los judíos de todas las ciudades para unirse y defender su vida. Se les permitía matar, masacrar y aniquilar a cualquiera, de cualquier nacionalidad o provincia, que los atacara a ellos o a sus esposas e hijos. También podían apoderarse de los bienes de sus enemigos.

12 El día escogido para llevar a cabo esa acción en todas las provincias del rey Jerjes fue el 7 de marzo del año siguiente.

13 En cada provincia debía emitirse una copia de ese decreto como ley y proclamarse a todos los pueblos, para que los judíos estuvieran preparados para vengarse de sus enemigos el día señalado.

14 Así que, impulsados por el mandato del rey, los mensajeros salieron a toda prisa sobre caballos rápidos, criados para el servicio del rey. Este mismo decreto también se proclamó en la fortaleza de Susa.

15 Luego Mardoqueo salió de la presencia del rey vestido con el manto real azul y blanco, con una gran corona de oro y con una capa de púrpura y lino de la más alta calidad. La gente de Susa también celebró el nuevo decreto y

16 los judíos se llenaron de gozo y alegría y recibieron honra en todas partes.

17 En cada provincia y ciudad, en cada lugar donde llegaba el decreto del rey, los judíos se alegraban mucho, festejaban a lo grande, y declararon día feriado y de celebración. También muchas personas del territorio se hicieron judíos por temor a lo que pudieran hacerles los judíos.

1 That same day King Xerxes gave Queen Esther the estate of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came into the presence of the king, for Esther had told how he was related to her.

2 The king took off his signet ring, which he had reclaimed from Haman, and presented it to Mordecai. And Esther appointed him over Haman’s estate.

3 Esther again pleaded with the king, falling at his feet and weeping. She begged him to put an end to the evil plan of Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews.

4 Then the king extended the gold scepter to Esther and she arose and stood before him.

5 “If it pleases the king,” she said, “and if he regards me with favor and thinks it the right thing to do, and if he is pleased with me, let an order be written overruling the dispatches that Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, devised and wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces.

6 For how can I bear to see disaster fall on my people? How can I bear to see the destruction of my family?”

7 King Xerxes replied to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Because Haman attacked the Jews, I have given his estate to Esther, and they have impaled him on the pole he set up.

8 Now write another decree in the king’s name in behalf of the Jews as seems best to you, and seal it with the king’s signet ring—for no document written in the king’s name and sealed with his ring can be revoked.”

9 At once the royal secretaries were summoned—on the twenty-third day of the third month, the month of Sivan. They wrote out all Mordecai’s orders to the Jews, and to the satraps, governors and nobles of the 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush. These orders were written in the script of each province and the language of each people and also to the Jews in their own script and language.

10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes, sealed the dispatches with the king’s signet ring, and sent them by mounted couriers, who rode fast horses especially bred for the king.

11 The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate the armed men of any nationality or province who might attack them and their women and children, and to plunder the property of their enemies.

12 The day appointed for the Jews to do this in all the provinces of King Xerxes was the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar.

13 A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so that the Jews would be ready on that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

14 The couriers, riding the royal horses, went out, spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa.

15 When Mordecai left the king’s presence, he was wearing royal garments of blue and white, a large crown of gold and a purple robe of fine linen. And the city of Susa held a joyous celebration.

16 For the Jews it was a time of happiness and joy, gladness and honor.

17 In every province and in every city to which the edict of the king came, there was joy and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebrating. And many people of other nationalities became Jews because fear of the Jews had seized them.
