Galatians 1

ESV 1 Paul, an apostle--not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead-- MSG 1 I, Paul, and my companions in faith here, send greetings to the Galatian churches. My authority for writing to you does not come from any popular vote of the people, nor does it come through the appointment of some human higher-up. It comes directly from Jesus the Messiah and God the Father, who raised him from the dead. I'm God-commissioned. ESV 2 and all the brothers who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: MSG 2 ESV 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, MSG 3 So I greet you with the great words, grace and peace! ESV 4 who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, MSG 4 We know the meaning of those words because Jesus Christ rescued us from this evil world we're in by offering himself as a sacrifice for our sins. God's plan is that we all experience that rescue. ESV 5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. MSG 5 Glory to God forever! Oh, yes! ESV 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- MSG 6 I can't believe your fickleness - how easily you have turned traitor to him who called you by the grace of Christ by embracing a variant message! ESV 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. MSG 7 It is not a minor variation, you know; it is completely other, an alien message, a no-message, a lie about God. Those who are provoking this agitation among you are turning the Message of Christ on its head. ESV 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. MSG 8 Let me be blunt: If one of us - even if an angel from heaven! - were to preach something other than what we preached originally, let him be cursed. ESV 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. MSG 9 I said it once; I'll say it again: If anyone, regardless of reputation or credentials, preaches something other than what you received originally, let him be cursed. ESV 10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. MSG 10 Do you think I speak this strongly in order to manipulate crowds? Or curry favor with God? Or get popular applause? If my goal was popularity, I wouldn't bother being Christ's slave. ESV 11 For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel. MSG 11 Know this - I am most emphatic here, friends - this great Message I delivered to you is not mere human optimism. ESV 12 For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. MSG 12 I didn't receive it through the traditions, and I wasn't taught it in some school. I got it straight from God, received the Message directly from Jesus Christ. ESV 13 For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it. MSG 13 I'm sure that you've heard the story of my earlier life when I lived in the Jewish way. In those days I went all out in persecuting God's church. I was systematically destroying it. ESV 14 And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. MSG 14 I was so enthusiastic about the traditions of my ancestors that I advanced head and shoulders above my peers in my career. ESV 15 But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, MSG 15 Even then God had designs on me. Why, when I was still in my mother's womb he chose and called me out of sheer generosity! ESV 16 was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone; MSG 16 Now he has intervened and revealed his Son to me so that I might joyfully tell non-Jews about him. ESV 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. MSG 17 and without going up to Jerusalem to confer with those who were apostles long before I was - I got away to Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus, ESV 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. MSG 18 but it was three years before I went up to Jerusalem to compare stories with Peter. I was there only fifteen days - but what days they were! ESV 19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. MSG 19 Except for our Master's brother James, I saw no other apostles. ESV 20 (In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!) MSG 20 (I'm telling you the absolute truth in this.) ESV 21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. MSG 21 Then I began my ministry in the regions of Syria and Cilicia. ESV 22 And I was still unknown in person to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. MSG 22 After all that time and activity I was still unknown by face among the Christian churches in Judea. ESV 23 They only were hearing it said, "He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy." MSG 23 There was only this report: "That man who once persecuted us is now preaching the very message he used to try to destroy." ESV 24 And they glorified God because of me. MSG 24 Their response was to recognize and worship God because of me!
