Genesis 38

CEBA 1 At that time, Judah moved away from his brothers and settled near an Adullamite named Hirah. NIV 1 At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah. CEBA 2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite whose name was Shua, and he married her. After he slept with her, NIV 2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her; CEBA 3 she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, whom she named Er. NIV 3 she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er. CEBA 4 She became pregnant again, gave birth to a son, and named him Onan. NIV 4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan. CEBA 5 Then she gave birth to one more son and named him Shelah. She was in Chezib when she gave birth to him. NIV 5 She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him. CEBA 6 Judah married his oldest son Er to a woman named Tamar. NIV 6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. CEBA 7 But the LORD considered Judah's oldest son Er immoral, and the LORD put him to death. NIV 7 But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the LORD’s sight; so the LORD put him to death. CEBA 8 Judah said to Onan, "Go to your brother's wife, do your duty as her brother-in-law, and provide children for your brother." NIV 8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.” CEBA 9 Onan knew the children wouldn't be his so when he slept with his brother's wife, he wasted his semen on the ground, so he wouldn't give his brother children. NIV 9 But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. CEBA 10 The LORD considered what he did as wrong and put him to death too. NIV 10 What he did was wicked in the LORD’s sight; so the LORD put him to death also. CEBA 11 Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Stay as a widow in your father's household until my son Shelah grows up." He thought Shelah would die like his brothers had. So Tamar went and lived in her father's household. NIV 11 Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household. CEBA 12 After a long time, Judah's wife the daughter of Shua died. Then, after a period of mourning, he and his neighbor Hirah the Adullamite went up to Timnah, to those who were shearing his sheep. NIV 12 After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him. CEBA 13 Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is now on his way up to Timnah to shear his sheep." NIV 13 When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,” CEBA 14 So Tamar took off the clothing she wore as a widow, covered herself with a veil, put on makeup, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim on the road to Timnah, since she realized that although Shelah had already grown up, she hadn't been given to him as a wife. NIV 14 she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife. CEBA 15 Judah saw her and thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face. NIV 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. CEBA 16 He turned to her beside the road and said, "Let me sleep with you," because he didn't know she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me for sleeping with you?" NIV 16 Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.” “And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked. CEBA 17 He said, "I will give you a kid goat from my flock." She said, "Only if you give me some deposit, as security to guarantee that you will send it." NIV 17 “I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said. “Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?” she asked. CEBA 18 He said, "What kind of deposit should I give you?" And she said, "Your seal, its cord, and the staff in your hand." He gave these to her, slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. NIV 18 He said, “What pledge should I give you?” “Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. CEBA 19 Then she got up, left, and took off her veil, dressing once again in the clothing she wore as a widow. NIV 19 After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes again. CEBA 20 Judah sent the kid goat with his neighbor the Adullamite so he could take back the deposits from the woman, but he couldn't find her. NIV 20 Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her. CEBA 21 He asked the locals of that place, "Where's the consecrated worker who was at Enaim on the road?" But they said, "There's no consecrated worker here." NIV 21 He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?” “There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said. CEBA 22 So he went back to Judah and said, "I couldn't find her. The locals even said, ‘There's no holy woman here.'" NIV 22 So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’ ” CEBA 23 Judah said, "Let her keep everything so we aren't laughed at. I did send this kid goat, but you couldn't find her." NIV 23 Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.” CEBA 24 About three months later, Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has become a prostitute and is now pregnant because of it." And Judah said, "Bring her out so that she may be burned." NIV 24 About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.” Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!” CEBA 25 When she was brought out, she sent this message to her father-in-law, "I'm pregnant by the man who owns these things. See if you recognize whose seal, cord, and staff these are." NIV 25 As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.” CEBA 26 Judah recognized them and said, "She's more righteous than I am, because I didn't allow her to marry my son Shelah." Judah never knew her intimately again. NIV 26 Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not sleep with her again. CEBA 27 When she gave birth, she discovered she had twins in her womb. NIV 27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. CEBA 28 At birth, one boy put out his hand, and the midwife took it and tied a red thread on his hand, saying, "This one came out first." NIV 28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, “This one came out first.” CEBA 29 As soon as he pulled his hand back, his brother came out, and she said, "You've burst out on your own." So he was named Perez. NIV 29 But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez. CEBA 30 Afterward, his brother with the red thread on his hand came out, and he was named Zerah. NIV 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out. And he was named Zerah.
