1 Asesinato de Santiago y encarcelamiento de Pedro<br />Por ese tiempo, el rey Herodes Agripa<br /> comenzó a perseguir a algunos creyentes de la iglesia.

It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.
2 Mandó matar a espada al apóstol Santiago (hermano de Juan).

He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.
3 Cuando Herodes vio cuánto esto le agradó al pueblo judío, también arrestó a Pedro. (Eso sucedió durante la celebración de la Pascua).

When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.
4 Después lo metió en la cárcel y lo puso bajo la vigilancia de cuatro escuadrones de cuatro soldados cada uno. Herodes tenía pensado llevar a Pedro a juicio público después de la Pascua.

After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.
5 Pero, mientras Pedro estaba en la cárcel, la iglesia oraba fervientemente por él.

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
6 Pedro escapa milagrosamente de la cárcel<br />La noche antes de ser sometido a juicio, Pedro dormía sujetado con dos cadenas entre dos soldados. Otros hacían guardia junto a la puerta de la prisión.

The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance.
7 De repente, una luz intensa iluminó la celda y un ángel del Señor se puso frente a Pedro. El ángel lo golpeó en el costado para despertarlo y le dijo: «¡Rápido! ¡Levántate!». Y las cadenas cayeron de sus muñecas.

Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.
8 Después, el ángel le dijo: «Vístete y ponte tus sandalias». Pedro lo hizo, y el ángel le ordenó: «Ahora ponte tu abrigo y sígueme».

Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him.
9 Así que Pedro salió de la celda y siguió al ángel, pero todo el tiempo pensaba que era una visión; no se daba cuenta de que en verdad eso estaba sucediendo.

Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.
10 Pasaron el primer puesto de guardia y luego el segundo y llegaron a la puerta de hierro que lleva a la ciudad, y esta puerta se abrió por sí sola frente a ellos. De esta manera cruzaron la puerta y empezaron a caminar por la calle, y de pronto el ángel lo dejó.

They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.
11 Finalmente Pedro volvió en sí. «¡De veras es cierto! —dijo—. ¡El Señor envió a su ángel y me salvó de Herodes y de lo que los líderes judíos<br /> tenían pensado hacerme!».

Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”
12 Cuando se dio cuenta de esto, fue a la casa de María, la madre de Juan Marcos, donde muchos se habían reunido para orar.

When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.
13 Tocó a la puerta de entrada, y una sirvienta llamada Rode fue a abrir.

Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.
14 Cuando ella reconoció la voz de Pedro, se alegró tanto que, en lugar de abrir la puerta, corrió hacia adentro y les dijo a todos:<br />—¡Pedro está a la puerta!

When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”
15 —¡Estás loca! —le dijeron.<br />Como ella insistía, llegaron a la conclusión: «Debe ser su ángel».

“You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”
16 Mientras tanto, Pedro seguía tocando. Cuando por fin abrieron la puerta y lo vieron, quedaron asombrados.

But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.
17 Él les hizo señas para que se callaran y les contó cómo el Señor lo había sacado de la cárcel. «Díganles a Santiago y a los demás hermanos lo que pasó», dijo. Y después se fue a otro lugar.

Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.
18 Al amanecer, hubo un gran alboroto entre los soldados por lo que había sucedido con Pedro.

In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.
19 Herodes Agripa ordenó que se hiciera una búsqueda exhaustiva para encontrar a Pedro. Como no pudieron encontrarlo, Herodes interrogó a los guardias y luego los condenó a muerte. Después Herodes se fue de Judea para quedarse en Cesarea por un tiempo.

After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there.
20 Muerte de Herodes Agripa<br />Ahora bien, Herodes estaba muy enojado con los habitantes de Tiro y de Sidón. Entonces ellos enviaron una delegación para que hiciera las paces con él, porque sus ciudades dependían del país de Herodes para obtener alimento. He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.
21 y así se les concedió una cita con Herodes. Cuando llegó el día, Herodes se puso sus vestiduras reales, se sentó en su trono y les dio un discurso.

On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people.
22 El pueblo le dio una gran ovación, gritando: «¡Es la voz de un dios, no la de un hombre!».

They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.”
23 Al instante, un ángel del Señor hirió a Herodes con una enfermedad, porque él aceptó la adoración de la gente en lugar de darle la gloria a Dios. Así que murió carcomido por gusanos.

Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
24 Mientras tanto, la palabra de Dios seguía extendiéndose, y hubo muchos nuevos creyentes.

But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.
25 Cuando Bernabé y Saulo terminaron su misión en Jerusalén, regresaron<br /> llevándose con ellos a Juan Marcos.

When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.
