Job 15

GNTA 1 Empty words, Job! NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: GNTA 2 Empty words! NIV 2 “Would a wise person answer with empty notions or fill their belly with the hot east wind? GNTA 3 No one who is wise would talk the way you do or defend himself with such meaningless words. NIV 3 Would they argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? GNTA 4 If you had your way, no one would fear God; no one would pray to him. NIV 4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. GNTA 5 Your wickedness is evident by what you say; you are trying to hide behind clever words. NIV 5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. GNTA 6 There is no need for me to condemn you; you are condemned by every word you speak. NIV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. GNTA 7 Do you think you were the first person born? Were you there when God made the mountains? NIV 7 “Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? GNTA 8 Did you overhear the plans God made? Does human wisdom belong to you alone? NIV 8 Do you listen in on God’s council? Do you have a monopoly on wisdom? GNTA 9 There is nothing you know that we don't know. NIV 9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? GNTA 10 We learned our wisdom from gray-haired people - those born before your father. NIV 10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. GNTA 11 God offers you comfort; why still reject it? We have spoken for him with calm, even words. NIV 11 Are God’s consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? GNTA 12 But you are excited and glare at us in anger. NIV 12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, GNTA 13 You are angry with God and denounce him. NIV 13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? GNTA 14 Can any human being be really pure? Can anyone be right with God? NIV 14 “What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous? GNTA 15 Why, God does not trust even his angels; even they are not pure in his sight. NIV 15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, GNTA 16 And we drink evil as if it were water; yes, we are corrupt; we are worthless. NIV 16 how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt, who drink up evil like water! GNTA 17 Now listen, Job, to what I know. NIV 17 “Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, GNTA 18 Those who are wise have taught me truths which they learned from their ancestors, and they kept no secrets hidden. NIV 18 what the wise have declared, hiding nothing received from their ancestors GNTA 19 Their land was free from foreigners; there was no one to lead them away from God. NIV 19 (to whom alone the land was given when no foreigners moved among them): GNTA 20 The wicked who oppress others will be in torment as long as they live. NIV 20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him. GNTA 21 Voices of terror will scream in their ears, and robbers attack when they think they are safe. NIV 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. GNTA 22 They have no hope of escaping from darkness, for somewhere a sword is waiting to kill them, NIV 22 He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness; he is marked for the sword. GNTA 23 and vultures are waiting to eat their corpses. They know their future is dark; NIV 23 He wanders about for food like a vulture; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. GNTA 24 disaster, like a powerful king, is waiting to attack them. NIV 24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; troubles overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, GNTA 25 That is the fate of those who shake their fists at God and defy the Almighty. NIV 25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, GNTA 26 They are proud and rebellious; they stubbornly hold up their shields and rush to fight against God. NIV 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. GNTA 28 They are the ones who captured cities and seized houses whose owners had fled, but war will destroy those cities and houses. NIV 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. GNTA 29 They will not remain rich for long; nothing they own will last. Even their shadows will vanish, NIV 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. GNTA 30 and they will not escape from darkness. They will be like trees whose branches are burned by fire, whose blossoms are blown away by the wind. NIV 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away. GNTA 31 If they are foolish enough to trust in evil, then evil will be their reward. NIV 31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. GNTA 32 Before their time is up they will wither, wither like a branch and never be green again. NIV 32 Before his time he will wither, and his branches will not flourish. GNTA 33 They will be like vines that lose their unripe grapes; like olive trees that drop their blossoms. NIV 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. GNTA 34 There will be no descendants for godless people, and fire will destroy the homes built by bribery. NIV 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. GNTA 35 These are the ones who plan trouble and do evil; their hearts are always full of deceit. NIV 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit.”
