KJV 1 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn? NIV 1 “Call if you will, but who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? KJV 2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. NIV 2 Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple. KJV 3 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. NIV 3 I myself have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed. KJV 4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. NIV 4 His children are far from safety, crushed in court without a defender. KJV 5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance. NIV 5 The hungry consume his harvest, taking it even from among thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth. KJV 6 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; NIV 6 For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground. KJV 7 Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. NIV 7 Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward. KJV 8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: NIV 8 “But if I were you, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him. KJV 9 Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number: NIV 9 He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted. KJV 10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields: NIV 10 He provides rain for the earth; he sends water on the countryside. KJV 11 To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety. NIV 11 The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. KJV 12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. NIV 12 He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success. KJV 13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. NIV 13 He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away. KJV 14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night. NIV 14 Darkness comes upon them in the daytime; at noon they grope as in the night. KJV 15 But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. NIV 15 He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful. KJV 16 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth. NIV 16 So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth. KJV 17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: NIV 17 “Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. KJV 18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole. NIV 18 For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal. KJV 19 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. NIV 19 From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will touch you. KJV 20 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword. NIV 20 In famine he will deliver you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword. KJV 21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh. NIV 21 You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes. KJV 22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth. NIV 22 You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the wild animals. KJV 23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. NIV 23 For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you. KJV 24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin. NIV 24 You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing. KJV 25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth. NIV 25 You will know that your children will be many, and your descendants like the grass of the earth. KJV 26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season. NIV 26 You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season. KJV 27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good. NIV 27 “We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself.”
