Jonah 3

NAS 1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, NIV 1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: NAS 2 "Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you." NIV 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” NAS 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD . Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days' walk. NIV 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. NAS 4 Then Jonah began to go through the city one day's walk; and he cried out and said, "Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown." NIV 4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” NAS 5 Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them. NIV 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. NAS 6 When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ashes. NIV 6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. NAS 7 He issued a proclamation and it said, "In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water. NIV 7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. NAS 8 "But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands. NIV 8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. NAS 9 "Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish." NIV 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” NAS 10 When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. NIV 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.
