Joshua 4

CEB 1 When the entire nation had finished crossing over the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, NIV 1 When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, CEB 2 "Pick twelve men from the people, one man per tribe. NIV 2 “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, CEB 3 Command them, ‘Pick up twelve stones from right here in the middle of the Jordan, where the feet of the priests had been firmly planted. Bring them across with you and put them down in the camp where you are staying tonight.'" NIV 3 and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.” CEB 4 Joshua called for the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one man per tribe. NIV 4 So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, CEB 5 Joshua said to them, "Cross over into the middle of the Jordan, up to the LORD your God's chest. Each of you, lift up a stone on his shoulder to match the number of the tribes of the Israelites. NIV 5 and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, CEB 6 This will be a symbol among you. In the future your children may ask, ‘What do these stones mean to you?' NIV 6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ CEB 7 Then you will tell them that the water of the Jordan was cut off before the LORD's covenant chest. When it crossed over the Jordan, the water of the Jordan was cut off. These stones will be an enduring memorial for the Israelites." NIV 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” CEB 8 The Israelites did exactly what Joshua ordered. They lifted twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, matching the number of the tribes of the Israelites, exactly as the LORD had said to Joshua. They brought them over to the camp and put them down there. NIV 8 So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. CEB 9 Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan where the feet of the priests had stood while carrying the covenant chest. They are still there today. NIV 9 Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day. CEB 10 Meanwhile, the priests carrying the chest were standing in the middle of the Jordan. They stood there until every command that the LORD had ordered Joshua to tell the people had been carried out. This was exactly what Moses had commanded Joshua. The people crossed over quickly. NIV 10 Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the LORD had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, CEB 11 As soon as all the people had finished crossing, the LORD's chest crossed over. The priests then moved to the front of the people. NIV 11 and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the LORD and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. CEB 12 The people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over, organized for war ahead of the Israelites, exactly as Moses had told them. NIV 12 The men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them. CEB 13 Approximately forty thousand armed for war crossed over in the LORD's presence to the plains of Jericho, ready for battle. NIV 13 About forty thousand armed for battle crossed over before the LORD to the plains of Jericho for war. CEB 14 The LORD made Joshua great in the opinion of all Israel on that day. So they revered him in the same way that they had revered Moses during all of his life. NIV 14 That day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses. CEB 15 The LORD said to Joshua, NIV 15 Then the LORD said to Joshua, CEB 16 "Command the priests carrying the chest containing the testimony to come up out of the Jordan." NIV 16 “Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law to come up out of the Jordan.” CEB 17 So Joshua commanded the priests, "Come up from the Jordan." NIV 17 So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.” CEB 18 The priests carrying the LORD's covenant chest came up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of their feet touched dry ground. At that moment, the water of the Jordan started flowing again. It ran as before, completely over its banks. NIV 18 And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before. CEB 19 The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month. They camped at Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. NIV 19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. CEB 20 Joshua set up at Gilgal those twelve stones they had taken from the Jordan. NIV 20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. CEB 21 He said to the Israelites, "In the future your children will ask their parents, ‘What about these stones?' NIV 21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ CEB 22 Then you will let your children know: ‘Israel crossed over the Jordan here on dry ground.' NIV 22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ CEB 23 This was because the LORD your God dried up the water of the Jordan before you until you crossed over. This was exactly what the LORD your God did to the Reed Sea. He dried it up before us until we crossed over. NIV 23 For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. CEB 24 This happened so that all the earth's peoples might know that the LORD's power is great and that you may always revere the LORD your God." NIV 24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God.”
