Luke 19:11-27

ESV 11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. NIV 11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. ESV 12 He said therefore, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. NIV 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. ESV 13 Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, 'Engage in business until I come.' NIV 13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas.‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’ ESV 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' NIV 14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’ ESV 15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. NIV 15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. ESV 16 The first came before him, saying, 'Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.' NIV 16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’ ESV 17 And he said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.' NIV 17 “ ‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’ ESV 18 And the second came, saying, 'Lord, your mina has made five minas.' NIV 18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’ ESV 19 And he said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.' NIV 19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’ ESV 20 Then another came, saying, 'Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; NIV 20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. ESV 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.' NIV 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ ESV 22 He said to him, 'I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? NIV 22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? ESV 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?' NIV 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’ ESV 24 And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.' NIV 24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’ ESV 25 And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten minas!' NIV 25 “ ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ ESV 26 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. NIV 26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. ESV 27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.'" NIV 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’ ”
