Matthew 14

GW 1 At that time Herod, ruler of Galilee, heard the news about Jesus. NIV 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, GW 2 He said to his officials, "This is John the Baptizer! He has come back to life. That's why he has the power to perform these miracles." NIV 2 and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” GW 3 Herod had arrested John, tied him up, and put him in prison. Herod did this for Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. NIV 3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, GW 4 John had been telling Herod, "It's not right for you to be married to her." NIV 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” GW 5 So Herod wanted to kill John. However, he was afraid of the people because they thought John was a prophet. NIV 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet. GW 6 When Herod celebrated his birthday, Herodias' daughter danced for his guests. Herod was so delighted with her that NIV 6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much GW 7 he swore he would give her anything she wanted. NIV 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. GW 8 Urged by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptizer on a platter." NIV 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” GW 9 The king regretted his promise. But because of his oath and his guests, he ordered that her wish be granted. NIV 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted GW 10 He had John's head cut off in prison. NIV 10 and had John beheaded in the prison. GW 11 So the head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. NIV 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. GW 12 John's disciples came for the body and buried it. Then they went to tell Jesus. NIV 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. GW 13 When Jesus heard about John, he left in a boat and went to a place where he could be alone. The crowds heard about this and followed him on foot from the cities. NIV 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. GW 14 When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He felt sorry for them and cured their sick people. NIV 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. GW 15 In the evening the disciples came to him. They said, "No one lives around here, and it's already late. Send the crowds to the villages to buy food for themselves." NIV 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” GW 16 Jesus said to them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat." NIV 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” GW 17 They told him, "All we have here are five loaves of bread and two fish." NIV 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. GW 18 Jesus said, "Bring them to me." NIV 18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. GW 19 Then he ordered the people to sit down on the grass. After he took the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed the food. He broke the loaves apart, gave them to the disciples, and they gave them to the people. NIV 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. GW 20 All of them ate as much as they wanted. When they picked up the leftover pieces, they filled twelve baskets. NIV 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. GW 21 About five thousand men had eaten. (This number does not include the women and children who had eaten.) NIV 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. GW 22 Jesus quickly made his disciples get into a boat and cross to the other side ahead of him while he sent the people away. NIV 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. GW 23 After sending the people away, he went up a mountain to pray by himself. When evening came, he was there alone. NIV 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, GW 24 The boat, now hundreds of yards from shore, was being thrown around by the waves because it was going against the wind. NIV 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. GW 25 Between three and six o'clock in the morning, he came to them. He was walking on the sea. NIV 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. GW 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. They said, "It's a ghost!" and began to scream because they were afraid. NIV 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. GW 27 Immediately, Jesus said, "Calm down! It's me. Don't be afraid!" NIV 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” GW 28 Peter answered, "Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water." NIV 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” GW 29 Jesus said, "Come!" So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. NIV 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. GW 30 But when he noticed how strong the wind was, he became afraid and started to sink. He shouted, "Lord, save me!" NIV 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” GW 31 Immediately, Jesus reached out, caught hold of him, and said, "You have so little faith! Why did you doubt?" NIV 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” GW 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped blowing. NIV 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. GW 33 The men in the boat bowed down in front of Jesus and said, "You are truly the Son of God." NIV 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” GW 34 They crossed the sea and landed at Gennesaret. NIV 34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. GW 35 The men there recognized Jesus and sent messengers all around the countryside. The people brought him everyone who was sick. NIV 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him GW 36 They begged him to let them touch just the edge of his clothes. Everyone who touched his clothes was made well. NIV 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
