The Message Bible

Matthew 7

ESV 1 "Judge not, that you be not judged. MSG 1 "Don't pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults - unless, of course, you want the same treatment. ESV 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. MSG 2 That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. ESV 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? MSG 3 It's easy to see a smudge on your neighbor's face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own. ESV 4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? MSG 4 Do you have the nerve to say, 'Let me wash your face for you,' when your own face is distorted by contempt? ESV 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. MSG 5 It's this whole traveling road-show mentality all over again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your part. Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face, and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor. ESV 6 "Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. MSG 6 "Don't be flip with the sacred. Banter and silliness give no honor to God. Don't reduce holy mysteries to slogans. In trying to be relevant, you're only being cute and inviting sacrilege. ESV 7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. MSG 7 "Don't bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. ESV 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. MSG 8 This isn't a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we're in. ESV 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? MSG 9 If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? ESV 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? MSG 10 If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? ESV 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! MSG 11 As bad as you are, you wouldn't think of such a thing. You're at least decent to your own children. So don't you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better? ESV 12 "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. MSG 12 "Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God's Law and Prophets and this is what you get. ESV 13 "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. MSG 13 "Don't look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. ESV 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. MSG 14 The way to life - to God! - is vigorous and requires total attention. ESV 15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. MSG 15 "Be wary of false preachers who smile a lot, dripping with practiced sincerity. Chances are they are out to rip you off some way or other. Don't be impressed with charisma; look for character. ESV 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? MSG 16 Who preachers are is the main thing, not what they say. A genuine leader will never exploit your emotions or your pocketbook. These diseased trees with their bad apples are going to be chopped down and burned. ESV 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. MSG 17 ESV 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. MSG 18 ESV 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. MSG 19 ESV 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. MSG 20 ESV 21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. MSG 21 "Knowing the correct password - saying 'Master, Master,' for instance - isn't going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience - doing what my Father wills. ESV 22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' MSG 22 I can see it now - at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, 'Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.' ESV 23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.' MSG 23 And do you know what I am going to say? 'You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don't impress me one bit. You're out of here.' ESV 24 "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. MSG 24 "These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. ESV 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. MSG 25 Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit - but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock. ESV 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. MSG 26 "But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don't work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. ESV 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it." MSG 27 When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards." ESV 28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, MSG 28 When Jesus concluded his address, the crowd burst into applause. They had never heard teaching like this. ESV 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. MSG 29 It was apparent that he was living everything he was saying - quite a contrast to their religion teachers! This was the best teaching they had ever heard.
