Naum 1

LXX 1 The burden of Nineve: the book of the vision of Naum the Elkesite. NIV 1 A prophecy concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. LXX 2 God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; the Lord avenges with wrath; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he cuts off his enemies. NIV 2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and vents his wrath against his enemies. LXX 3 The Lord is long-suffering, and his power is great, and the Lord will not hold any guiltless: his way is in destruction and in the whirlwind, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. NIV 3 The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet. LXX 4 He threatens the sea, and dries it up, and exhausts all the rivers: the land of Basan, and Carmel are brought low, and the flourishing of Libanus have come to nought. NIV 4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade. LXX 5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills are shaken, and the earth recoils at his presence, the world, and all that dwell in it. NIV 5 The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it. LXX 6 Who shall stand before his anger? and who shall withstand in the anger of his wrath? his wrath brings to nought kingdoms, and the rocks are burst asunder by him. NIV 6 Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him. LXX 7 The Lord is good to them that wait on him in the day of affliction; and he knows them that reverence him. NIV 7 The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him, LXX 8 But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end: darkness shall pursue those that rise up against and his enemies. NIV 8 but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of Nineveh; he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness. LXX 9 What do ye devise against the Lord? he will make a complete end: he will not take vengeance by affliction twice at the same time. NIV 9 Whatever they plot against the LORDhe will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time. LXX 10 For shall be laid bare even to the foundation, and shall be devoured as twisted yew, and as stubble fully dry. NIV 10 They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble. LXX 11 Out of thee shall proceed a device against the Lord, counselling evil things hostile . NIV 11 From you, Nineveh, has one come forth who plots evil against the LORDand devises wicked plans. LXX 12 Thus saith the Lord who rules over many waters, Even thus shall they be sent away, and the report of thee shall not be heard any more. NIV 12 This is what the LORD says: “Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be destroyed and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, Judah, I will afflict you no more. LXX 13 And now will I break his rod from off thee, and will burst bonds. NIV 13 Now I will break their yoke from your neck and tear your shackles away.” LXX 14 And the Lord shall give a command concerning thee; there shall no more of thy name be scattered: I will utterly destroy the graven out of the house of thy god, and the molten : I will make thy grave; for swift. NIV 14 The LORD has given a command concerning you, Nineveh: “You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the images and idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile.” LXX 15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that brings glad tidings, and publishes peace! O Juda, keep thy feasts, pay thy vows: for they shall no more pass through thee to decay. NIV 15 Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.
