CEB 1 The LORD spoke to Moses in the Sinai desert in the meeting tent on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they left the land of Egypt: NRS 1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: CEB 2 Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and their households, recording the name of every male, NRS 2 Take a census of the whole congregation of Israelites, in their clans, by ancestral houses, according to the number of names, every male individually; CEB 3 20 years old and above, who is eligible for military service in Israel. These you and Aaron will enlist in their military units. NRS 3 from twenty years old and upward, everyone in Israel able to go to war. You and Aaron shall enroll them, company by company. CEB 4 Take with you one man from each tribe who is the head of his household. NRS 4 A man from each tribe shall be with you, each man the head of his ancestral house. CEB 5 These are the names of the men who will assist you: from Reuben, Elizur, Shedeur's son; NRS 5 These are the names of the men who shall assist you: From Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur. CEB 16 These are the ones appointed from the community, chiefs of their ancestral tribes and leaders of the divisions of Israel. Every man 20 years old and above eligible for military service was individually recorded by name. NRS 20 The descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, individually, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 21 Those enlisted from the tribe of Reuben were 46,500. NRS 21 those enrolled of the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred. CEB 22 There were the descendants of Simeon, registered by their clans and their households. NRS 22 The descendants of Simeon, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, those of them that were numbered, according to the number of names, individually, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 23 Those enlisted from the tribe of Simeon were 59,300. NRS 23 those enrolled of the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred. CEB 24 There were the descendants of Gad, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 24 The descendants of Gad, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 25 Those enlisted from the tribe of Gad were 45,650. NRS 25 those enrolled of the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty. CEB 26 There were the descendants of Judah, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 26 The descendants of Judah, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 27 Those enlisted from the tribe of Judah were 74,600. NRS 27 those enrolled of the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred. CEB 28 There were the descendants of Issachar, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 28 The descendants of Issachar, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 29 Those enlisted from the tribe of Issachar were 54,400. NRS 29 those enrolled of the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand four hundred. CEB 30 There were the descendants of Zebulun, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 30 The descendants of Zebulun, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 31 Those enlisted from the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400. CEB 32 From Joseph's descendants there were the descendants of Ephraim, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 32 The descendants of Joseph, namely, the descendants of Ephraim, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 33 Those enlisted from the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500. NRS 33 those enrolled of the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred. CEB 34 There were the descendants of Manasseh, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 34 The descendants of Manasseh, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 35 Those enlisted from the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200. NRS 35 those enrolled of the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand two hundred. CEB 36 There were the descendants of Benjamin, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 36 The descendants of Benjamin, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 37 Those enlisted from the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400. NRS 37 those enrolled of the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred. CEB 38 There were the descendants of Dan, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 38 The descendants of Dan, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 39 Those enlisted from the tribe of Dan were 62,700. NRS 39 those enrolled of the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand seven hundred. CEB 40 There were the descendants of Asher, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 40 The descendants of Asher, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 41 Those enlisted from the tribe of Asher were 41,500. NRS 41 those enrolled of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred. CEB 42 There were the descendants of Naphtali, registered by their clans and their households. The men 20 years old and above eligible for military service were recorded by name. NRS 42 The descendants of Naphtali, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: CEB 43 Those enlisted from the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400. NRS 43 those enrolled of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred. CEB 44 These are the ones who were enlisted by Moses, Aaron, and the twelve chiefs of Israel, each from his own household. NRS 44 These are those who were enrolled, whom Moses and Aaron enrolled with the help of the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each representing his ancestral house. CEB 45 All the Israelites 20 years old and above eligible for military service in Israel were enlisted by their households. NRS 45 So the whole number of the Israelites, by their ancestral houses, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war in Israel— CEB 46 All those enlisted were 603,550. NRS 46 their whole number was six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty. CEB 47 But the Levites, belonging to their own ancestral tribe, weren't enlisted along with them. NRS 47 The Levites, however, were not numbered by their ancestral tribe along with them. CEB 48 The LORD spoke to Moses: NRS 48 The Lord had said to Moses: CEB 49 You must not enlist the tribe of Levi, nor should you take their census along with the Israelites. NRS 49 Only the tribe of Levi you shall not enroll, and you shall not take a census of them with the other Israelites. CEB 50 Rather, assign the Levites to the covenant dwelling, to all its equipment, and to everything that belongs to it. They will carry the dwelling and all its equipment, perform its religious ceremonies, and camp around the dwelling. NRS 50 Rather you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the covenant, and over all its equipment, and over all that belongs to it; they are to carry the tabernacle and all its equipment, and they shall tend it, and shall camp around the tabernacle. CEB 51 When it's time to break camp, the Levites will take down the dwelling; and when it's time to make camp, the Levites will set up the dwelling. Any other person who approaches will be put to death. NRS 51 When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And any outsider who comes near shall be put to death. CEB 52 The Israelites will camp each in their own place under the banner of their own military unit. NRS 52 The other Israelites shall camp in their respective regimental camps, by companies; CEB 53 But the Levites will camp around the covenant dwelling so that God's anger will not strike the Israelite community. The Levites will guard the covenant dwelling. NRS 53 but the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the covenant, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the Israelites; and the Levites shall perform the guard duty of the tabernacle of the covenant. CEB 54 The Israelites did everything exactly as the LORD commanded Moses. NRS 54 The Israelites did so; they did just as the Lord commanded Moses.
