NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. ASV 7 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; [But] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. ASV 8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother: NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. ASV 9 For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck. NIV 9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. ASV 10 My son, if sinners entice thee, Consent thou not. NIV 10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. ASV 11 If they say, Come with us, Let us lay wait for blood; Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause; NIV 11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; ASV 12 Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, And whole, as those that go down into the pit; NIV 12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; ASV 13 We shall find all precious substance; We shall fill our houses with spoil; NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; ASV 14 Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; We will all have one purse: NIV 14 cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”— ASV 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; Refrain thy foot from their path: NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; ASV 16 For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood. NIV 16 for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. ASV 17 For in vain is the net spread In the sight of any bird: NIV 17 How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! ASV 18 And these lay wait for their own blood; They lurk privily for their own lives. NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! ASV 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; It taketh away the life of the owners thereof. NIV 19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it. ASV 20 Wisdom crieth aloud in the street; She uttereth her voice in the broad places; NIV 20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; ASV 21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse; At the entrance of the gates, In the city, she uttereth her words: NIV 21 on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: ASV 22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And scoffers delight them in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge? NIV 22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? ASV 23 Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you; I will make known my words unto you. NIV 23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. ASV 24 Because I have called, and ye have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man hath regarded; NIV 24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, ASV 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, And would none of my reproof: NIV 25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, ASV 26 I also will laugh in [the day of] your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; NIV 26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you— ASV 27 When your fear cometh as a storm, And your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come upon you. NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. ASV 28 Then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me: NIV 28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, ASV 29 For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of Jehovah: NIV 29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. ASV 30 They would none of my counsel; They despised all my reproof. NIV 30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, ASV 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own devices. NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. ASV 32 For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, And the careless ease of fools shall destroy them. NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; ASV 33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, And shall be quiet without fear of evil. NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
