Proverbs 1

YLT 1 Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: YLT 2 For knowing wisdom and instruction, For understanding sayings of intelligence, NIV 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; YLT 3 For receiving the instruction of wisdom, Righteousness, judgment, and uprightness, NIV 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; YLT 4 For giving to simple ones -- prudence, To a youth -- knowledge and discretion. NIV 4 for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young— YLT 5 (The wise doth hear and increaseth learning, And the intelligent doth obtain counsels.) NIV 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance— YLT 6 For understanding a proverb and its sweetness, Words of the wise and their acute sayings. NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. YLT 7 Fear of Jehovah [is] a beginning of knowledge, Wisdom and instruction fools have despised! NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. YLT 8 Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, And leave not the law of thy mother, NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. YLT 9 For a graceful wreath [are] they to thy head, And chains to thy neck. NIV 9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. YLT 10 My son, if sinners entice thee be not willing. NIV 10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. YLT 11 If they say, `Come with us, we lay wait for blood, We watch secretly for the innocent without cause, NIV 11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; YLT 12 We swallow them as Sheol -- alive, And whole -- as those going down [to] the pit, NIV 12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; YLT 13 Every precious substance we find, We fill our houses [with] spoil, NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; YLT 14 Thy lot thou dost cast among us, One purse is -- to all of us.' NIV 14 cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”— YLT 15 My son! go not in the way with them, Withhold thy foot from their path, NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; YLT 16 For their feet to evil do run, And they haste to shed blood. NIV 16 for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. YLT 17 Surely in vain is the net spread out before the eyes of any bird. NIV 17 How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! YLT 18 And they for their own blood lay wait, They watch secretly for their own lives. NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! YLT 19 So [are] the paths of every gainer of dishonest gain, The life of its owners it taketh. NIV 19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it. YLT 20 Wisdom in an out-place crieth aloud, In broad places she giveth forth her voice, NIV 20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; YLT 21 At the head of the multitudes she calleth, In the openings of the gates, In the city her sayings she saith: NIV 21 on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: YLT 22 `Till when, ye simple, do ye love simplicity? And have scorners their scorning desired? And do fools hate knowledge? NIV 22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? YLT 23 Turn back at my reproof, lo, I pour forth to you my spirit, I make known my words with you. NIV 23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. YLT 24 Because I have called, and ye refuse, I stretched out my hand, and none is attending, NIV 24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, YLT 25 And ye slight all my counsel, And my reproof ye have not desired. NIV 25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, YLT 26 I also in your calamity do laugh, I deride when your fear cometh, NIV 26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you— YLT 27 When your fear cometh as destruction, And your calamity as a hurricane doth come, When on you come adversity and distress. NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. YLT 28 Then they call me, and I do not answer, They seek me earnestly, and find me not. NIV 28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, YLT 29 Because that they have hated knowledge, And the fear of Jehovah have not chosen. NIV 29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. YLT 30 They have not consented to my counsel, They have despised all my reproof, NIV 30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, YLT 31 And they eat of the fruit of their way, And from their own counsels they are filled. NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. YLT 32 For the turning of the simple slayeth them, And the security of the foolish destroyeth them. NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; YLT 33 And whoso is hearkening to me dwelleth confidently, And [is] quiet from fear of evil!' NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
